YouTube has decided to forgo their traditional “Rewind” video this year, marking the first time since 2010 that the platform won’t close out the year with this recap. The annual retrospective highlights the most popular videos and memorable moments in pop culture, serving as a playful visual yearbook. However, given the overwhelming difficulties of 2020, the video giant has opted to take a break, describing the year as a “hard year,” which may be one of the biggest understatements of the decade.
“Since 2010, we’ve concluded the year with Rewind, showcasing the most impactful creators, videos, and trends. Whether you loved it, or perhaps only have memories of 2018, Rewind was always intended to celebrate you,” YouTube stated. “But 2020 has been different, and it doesn’t feel appropriate to proceed as if it were not. Therefore, we’re taking a pause from Rewind this year.”
In 2019, the Rewind video featured the most liked content on the platform, celebrating everything from K-pop to DIY slime-making to Ariana Grande’s music. It was vibrant and fun, capturing the essence of what resonated with viewers that year. In 2018, despite criticisms of being cheesy, YouTube presented a scripted video featuring top creators and prominent trends like ASMR and Fortnite. These videos have typically been lighthearted and sincere, but unfortunately, 2020 has not followed suit.
With a deadly pandemic, social unrest, and political upheaval dominating the headlines, there’s not much from this year that many would want to remember.
“We recognize that many of the positive moments in 2020 were brought to life by you,” YouTube mentioned, likely referring to its creators. “You’ve found ways to uplift others, help them cope, and bring joy. You’ve genuinely improved a tough year.”
Google, which owns YouTube, also releases a “Year In Search” video annually, and honestly, I’m not sure I want to see what was searched this year. Can you imagine the queries? “What if Trump refuses to leave office?” “Does bleach really kill the coronavirus?” A break from this dreadful year would be welcome. It will be interesting to see if Google also decides to skip its year-end summary. As we approach the last 49 days of 2020, it’s clear that the pandemic and our political climate won’t just vanish, so um, sorry about that.

Summary:
YouTube has decided not to produce its annual “Rewind” video for 2020, citing the year’s overwhelming challenges as the reason. With a focus on uplifting moments created by its community, YouTube acknowledges that the year hasn’t felt celebratory. Meanwhile, Google’s year-end retrospectives are also under scrutiny, as many would prefer to forget 2020 altogether.
