It’s hard to explain why we even thought about it. My partner and I are already on edge due to the ongoing viral outbreak. Speed-walking through the grocery store felt like a scene from a horror film. There’s a severe shortage of toilet paper, and certain media personalities are suggesting the elderly should sacrifice themselves for the economy. Meanwhile, healthcare workers are crafting masks from plastic folder inserts due to a lack of supplies.
The situation is terrifying, so we didn’t need to add fuel to the fire. Yet, when Contagion appeared on our streaming platform, I couldn’t help myself. I glanced at my partner, gave a nonchalant shrug, and hit “rent.” Two hours later, I found myself curled up in a ball on the couch, feeling like a frightened child. It seems that fictional depictions of viral outbreaks have become our new modern-day documentaries. Take my advice: steer clear of them unless you enjoy self-inflicted anxiety.
While I don’t regret watching Contagion, it certainly heightened my already chronic anxiety. It left me more infuriated with our leaders and anxiously anticipating what lies ahead. Thanks to that movie, I’m now in an endless cycle of handwashing.
To save you from my mistakes, here’s a list of pandemic-themed entertainment that you really should think twice about indulging in. I know many of you will probably disregard my warnings, and honestly, I can relate. Self-isolation can seriously mess with your mindset.
But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
- Outbreak
A mischievous monkey accidentally unleashes a virus on a small town, prompting Dustin Hoffman to team up with Morgan Freeman to save the day. Special shoutout to Lucy, the fierce female character who stands her ground, and that little girl who unwittingly feeds her contagious furry friend. - Pandemic
This 2019 Netflix docuseries eerily predicts a virus like COVID-19 would wreak havoc globally. If you want to be on high alert while experts detail how to prevent and manage a pandemic, this is the show for you. - Carriers
Two brothers and their girlfriends embark on a road trip to escape a deadly virus sweeping the globe. This horror film serves up plenty of germ-filled dread but, of course, you won’t be watching it (Right?). - Bird Box
While not about a virus, this film revolves around an unseen force that decimates humanity. Sandra Bullock and her two kids fight for survival, blindfolded and trusting no one. - Quarantine
A reporter follows firefighters for a routine call, unaware that an infected woman is waiting behind the door. The CDC seals the building, trapping everyone inside to face a rapidly spreading virus. Just a reminder that being stuck at home with your kids is nothing compared to this nightmare scenario. - Cabin Fever
This 2016 remake follows a group of Gen Z teens who head to a secluded cabin, only to encounter a flesh-eating virus. A must-see for those who continue to throw reckless gatherings despite the pandemic. - 28 Days Later
A man wakes up to discover a city devastated by a highly contagious virus that turns people into rage-fueled zombies. Not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not ideal viewing during these times. - Blindness
Julianne Moore portrays the only person who remains sighted in a city overtaken by a disease that causes blindness. As society collapses, her character must navigate the chaos to find safety. - It Comes at Night
A mysterious infection has ravaged the world, isolating a family in the woods. Themes of fear and paranoia run rampant in this minimalist horror thriller, a scenario I hope we never face. - Contagion
This pandemic thriller reflects our current reality on a grand scale. Did director Steven Soderbergh foresee our plight when he created this film in 2011? With its stellar cast and gripping performances, it’s sure to keep you at least six feet away from everyone else.
So there you have it. If I haven’t made my warnings clear enough, you’ve been duly cautioned. Proceed with caution and, for the sake of your health, stay home. For more insights, check out this other blog post from us!
In summary, while the urge to watch pandemic-themed entertainment might be strong, it’s best to think twice before diving in. The psychological toll of these films can outweigh any entertainment value, especially during stressful times. For more information on pregnancy and home insemination, visit this excellent resource.
