You Know You’re a Grandma When…

You might just be a Grandma if:

  • When your daughter calls to vent about the toddlers turning the bathroom into a water park by splashing in the toilet, you find yourself asking for photos and bursting into laughter. (In contrast, when your own kids did this, you would have locked yourself in the bathroom, overwhelmed.)
  • Your grandchild requests Cheetos for breakfast, and you cheerfully respond, “Why not? Cheetos instead of oatmeal sounds great!” You then convince yourself that they must contain cheese, which is a dairy product that promotes strong bones. (Your own children, however, were expected to eat oatmeal or eggs every morning.)
  • When your grandchild innocently tells the mailman, “Grandma has old breasts,” you beam with pride, feeling a sense of humor about it. After all, she’s talking about your “old” body, not that of the other grandma. (This was far from amusing when your kids made similar comments.)
  • The phone rings, and you find yourself having an endless chit-chat session with a fourteen-month-old. You feel like the Pope is on the line—this is even better!
  • When your daughter shares tales of a twenty-minute tantrum in the grocery store, you hang on to every word, laughing at the little one’s fiery spirit. (This kind of behavior was quite frustrating when your children exhibited it.)
  • Snuggling up in a small bed with your granddaughter feels like Christmas morning. Waking up to her bright, smiling face is a joy like no other. (When your own kids slept in your bed, you often awoke feeling like a grumpy bear.)
  • You sing goofy songs repeatedly throughout the day, mastering all the dance moves that go along with them. (With your kids, you would have turned off the music after just a few rounds.)
  • Observing tiny creatures such as tree frogs, ants, and fireflies brings you genuine delight. (With your own children, you typically swatted them away, always in a hurry.)
  • As you reflect on those chaotic years, a tear may form in your eye. You realize how much you miss those days, recognizing they were indeed some of the best times of your life.

And with that, you officially embrace the title of Grandma.
