You Have to Find the Humor in Parenting

Throughout my days, weeks, and years, I encounter a range of challenges—some annoying, some frustrating, and others simply infuriating. These moments can really get under my skin, making me feel like I might just pull my hair out in exasperation. Welcome to motherhood, a journey filled with trials that come with the territory.

The adventure begins the first time your child has an explosive diaper incident on you and, according to my wise 73-year-old aunt, it seems to never truly end. As a mom, I often find myself in situations that seem less than ideal. For instance, I worry about how to manage our finances while supporting my partner’s education, or how to convince my little one to eat their vegetables. With my son teetering on the edge of climbing out of his crib, I feel like my entire world could change in a moment.

So, what’s my response?

Sure, I could shed tears over these challenges—and some days I do, letting out a good cry and perhaps drowning my woes in a glass of wine. However, I much prefer to uncover the humor in these situations. When my son bolts into the kitchen completely nude after his bath, leaving a trail of chaos, I can either scold him or laugh at his ecstatic dance moves as he gleefully splashes around.

When my daughter, who has been suspiciously quiet, is discovered sitting on her bed encircled by wrappers of my secret stash of chocolates, I can either wallow in guilt for not keeping it hidden or chuckle at her chocolate-covered face and her sheepish attempts to tidy up the mess.

Even when my partner forgets to put his plate in the dishwasher for the umpteenth time, leaving it for my toddlers to find, I could feel defeated. Instead, I can laugh as my son uses the plate as a drum while my daughter dances to the impromptu rhythm.

For every parent, it’s crucial to embrace laughter. Find joy in your children’s antics, your partner’s quirks, and even your own missteps. Parenting is undoubtedly one of the toughest jobs, and without humor, it’s easy to succumb to feelings of guilt and stress.

Did you burn dinner? Have a laugh at the thought that you really believed your kids would eat something like broccoli and brown rice. Is your partner’s snoring causing an early wake-up call? Look at your child’s wild bed head and enjoy a hearty laugh.

From toothpaste on the walls to macaroni scattered across the floor, and a little one covered in your makeup, it’s all part of the adventure. Don’t let guilt or the pressure from social media push you into despair. Just laugh—it’s the best medicine.
