In a powerful continuation of the March For Our Lives movement, a group of approximately 50 high school students from Wisconsin is setting out on a 50-mile march from Madison to Janesville, the hometown of U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan. Their journey, which began shortly after the inspiring events of the March For Our Lives rally, seeks to maintain the momentum in the fight for stricter gun control laws.

The students plan to cover around 13 miles each day over four days, taking breaks to rest at local high schools along their path. They are expected to arrive at Traxler Park in Janesville on March 28. This march symbolizes their call for a four-day waiting period for gun purchases, a policy they believe is essential for preventing gun violence.

Voices for Change

Katie Carter, co-founder of the 50 Miles More initiative, emphasized the importance of keeping the dialogue around gun control alive. “We have witnessed too many instances where the media and political figures quickly shift their focus away from the impact of gun violence,” she stated. “Having lived through school shootings and the subsequent inaction, we are determined to ensure our voices are heard this time.”

With each mile they traverse, the students are sharing the stories of children who lost their lives to gun violence, aiming to personalize the statistics and remind the public of the human cost of inaction. “We are committed to holding our elected officials accountable, particularly Paul Ryan, who has the authority to enact meaningful change,” co-leader Alex Martinez added. “If those in power choose to ignore our demands, the youth will make their voices heard at the ballot box in the upcoming elections.”

Moments of Joy Amidst a Serious Cause

Amid the serious nature of their cause, the students are also infusing moments of joy into their journey. They are urging Ryan, who has received substantial financial support from gun rights organizations, to reconsider his alignment with such groups, especially in light of the proactive efforts of youth in combating gun violence.

As these young advocates march forward, they are sending a clear message: they refuse to let their fight for safety and accountability be overshadowed by political indifference.
