The other evening, my partner and I were browsing through Netflix for something fresh to watch, and I noticed that a series called Sweet Magnolias was topping the charts. I had never encountered it before, but something about it piqued my interest.
After catching a glimpse of the trailer, which showcased three resilient women navigating life’s challenges together, I was hooked. My partner suggested we check out White Lines instead, but I promptly declined, declaring, “I want to watch Sweet Magnolias.” It struck a chord with my fondness for light-hearted summer reads, and I was in dire need of something uplifting to lift my spirits.
Despite his attempts to convince me that I would enjoy it more solo, I stood firm, and he begrudgingly agreed to join me. Fast forward two episodes later, and he was utterly captivated, exclaiming, “I just have to watch one more before bed.” Ah, sweet vindication!
Sweet Magnolias has everything I adore. It’s a feel-good show—think Hallmark vibes—but it also weaves enough drama to keep you guessing about what’s next. Plus, it’s family-friendly, so I can watch it with my kids.
Set in the charming southern town of Serenity, this series features ten episodes and is based on the book series by Sherryl Woods. I’m not sure why I haven’t delved into those books yet, but they’ve just made it to the top of my summer reading list—I need more of this delightful experience in my life.
The breathtaking scenery alone makes Sweet Magnolias worth the watch. The lush landscapes, blooming trees, and vibrant magnolia flowers are so stunning that you may forget all about being stuck at home during quarantine.
The story revolves around Maddie, portrayed by JoAnna Garcia, who is grappling with a divorce after her husband leaves her for a much younger coworker. Her life is turned upside down, and she faces the prospect of losing her home while trying to navigate the workforce after years of being a stay-at-home mom to three kids.
Maddie’s best friends, played by Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley, swoop in to help her reclaim her life. Together, they purchase a southern mansion and transform it into their dream spa. It’s like an episode of HGTV mixed with the charm of Gilmore Girls.
The trio confronts various life challenges—ranging from divorce to rekindled romances, parenting struggles, and workplace drama—all while sipping beautifully crafted cocktails every Friday night. I must admit, one of my favorite aspects of the show is how the characters fill their glasses to the brim, making you want to rush to the kitchen to whip up a margarita right away.
There’s also a delightful cooking element that will leave you craving a cozy bed and breakfast experience. Not only does the show highlight the strength of female friendships, but it also balances heartwarming moments with just enough conflict to keep it engaging—not too “fluffy.” I’ve heard there’s some eye candy in the show, but honestly, I was too engrossed in the plot to notice.
I won’t spoil anything else, but let’s just say the finale leaves you on the edge of your seat, craving more—and viewers are not pleased about the cliffhanger. While Netflix hasn’t officially announced a second season, there are whispers that if the audience continues to love it (it did push Avatar out of the top spot and has earned five stars), a second season could be on the horizon for 2021.
If you’re overwhelmed by negativity and uncertainty, I can’t recommend Sweet Magnolias highly enough. Even if your partner insists they won’t enjoy it, go ahead and insist they join you. Trust me, they’ll thank you later. My partner and I finished it in just two nights, and I’m pretty sure his eyes glistened a bit when it was over (let’s keep that between us!). It’s equally enjoyable solo, wrapped up in a cozy robe and watching in bed. In fact, I might just head up for another round right now—it’s that good!
