Why I’m Excited About My Eldest Starting College

As we prepare for the transition of our eldest, Mia, heading off to college, I can already sense that I’ll be an emotional wreck during her drop-off. My family is likely plotting ways to gently extract me from her dorm room before I make a scene. We’ve already celebrated several significant milestones: her final first day of school, the last school dance, college tours, and signing acceptance letters. Each moment has been met with her eye-roll as she asks, “Are you going to cry again?” I can’t help it, sweetheart—these moments are just too precious.

With the two major events—graduation and college move-in day—looming, I knew I needed a game plan. I must focus on the bright future ahead rather than dwell on the cherished memories we’re leaving behind. So, my dear Mia, aside from the gratitude I feel for the incredible opportunities a college education will offer you, here are my top five reasons to be excited about this new chapter:

1. An Archaeological Expedition—Your Room

Packing up your belongings for college is going to be a monumental task, but think of the treasures we’ll unearth! From childhood photos to forgotten notes, plastic jewelry, and plush toys, it’s going to be like an archaeological dig. No matter how many spring cleanings we’ve done, there are always hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

2. Care Packages

I find joy in the little things I can do to ease your stress—whether it’s preparing your lunch, doing laundry, or carving out girl time. While I won’t be there to do these things once you’re away, I can still send you care packages filled with love from home. Just the thought of a note or a treat from us brightening your day brings me happiness.

3. Your Brother’s Time as the ‘Only Child’

For the first few years, you held the title of the only child, and you thrived in that spotlight. Now, your brother, Leo, will relish his time as the sole focus of our attention during high school. He jokingly thinks you had the better deal and is unsure about being the center of our world for the next four years!

4. Halfway to an Empty Nest

Your dad and I started our family early, which meant prioritizing parenting over couple time. While we’re not quite ready for an empty nest yet, we know that by the time Leo is off to college, we’ll be excited to explore new adventures together. Remember, our continued love and enjoyment of one another after all these years is something to cherish.

5. It’s Your Time to Soar

You are fully prepared to take flight into this next phase of life. While it may be exhilarating and at times daunting, this journey is one of the most fulfilling experiences you will encounter. And if you ever need a safe space to land and recharge, we will always be here for you.
