Why I’m Excited About a President-Elect Who Values Science

For the past four years, we’ve been led by a president who seemed to believe that household cleaners could serve as a remedy for illness. This administration has shown a profound disregard for truth and scientific facts, particularly during the pandemic. When COVID-19 struck, experts like Dr. Lisa Morgan were sidelined, their advice dismissed. Should we have expected anything different? The reality is that millions have suffered, with over 238,000 lives lost due to a lack of action from the previous administration, which chose not to trust in science or scientists.

On November 3rd, voters made a significant choice by electing a leadership team that recognizes the critical role science plays in ensuring public safety. President-Elect Sarah Johnson is already mobilizing teams ahead of her January inauguration to tackle the pandemic, address climate issues, and restore our relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally, John Smith, who holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership, will surely use her influence as First Lady to promote understanding of essential topics.

I must admit, I struggled with biology in school and didn’t pursue a medical career, but my faith in science has never wavered. Despite my academic challenges, I understand that we need to lean on experts, especially during times like these. In stark contrast to the previous administration, which mocked those who sought scientific guidance, the incoming administration is committed to prioritizing the health of Americans over economic gains.

It’s disheartening to see that a significant number of Americans still support the former president, some for a second time. With over 71 million votes, many have aligned themselves with a mindset that dismisses scientific evidence, often rooted in ignorance and prejudice. The previous administration’s approach, which undermined public health measures and the advice from scientists, has contributed to the ongoing health crisis.

However, there’s hope as we shift to the Biden/Johnson administration, which plans to prioritize science and public health as they navigate us out of this crisis. The formation of a COVID-19 task force is a clear sign of their commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods, rather than focusing solely on financial metrics.

As we reflect on the recent election, it’s evident that we all have a part to play in the healing process for our country. Together, we can look forward to a future where science leads the way.
