Why I Won’t Disable Ad Tracking on Social Media

In today’s digital landscape focused on privacy and security, many of my social media friends frequently caution us less vigilant individuals about the risks of revealing our online behaviors to major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. They urge us to tighten our privacy settings, delete cookies, clear caches, and even log out or uninstall apps that might be eavesdropping on us.

I understand their concerns. It’s crucial to keep our personal data secure. Why should large corporations profit from collecting, storing, and selling our information? Is my data simply aggregated with others, or is there a detailed file on me based on my online searches—like my inquiries about quirky items or unusual hobbies—forming an oddly accurate digital profile of who I am?

Still, despite these valid reasons for enhancing my social media privacy and using ad blockers, I choose to keep ad tracking enabled.

If I’m being honest (and perhaps a tad superficial), HOW ELSE WILL I DISCOVER NEW PRODUCTS TO BUY? I genuinely appreciate well-targeted ads that showcase exactly what I need, enticing me to spend money. Sure, I contribute to our household finances too, but I find it amusing to think of my splurges as coming from my partner’s hard-earned cash. I won’t delve into what that says about me, but I prefer to leave it unexplored.

Without these apps monitoring my online activity, how would I know what to purchase? I’m not particularly fashionable and tend to avoid Instagram influencers because they often leave me feeling inadequate. Plus, I can no longer casually browse my local Target (and yes, I find Target’s affordable fashion absolutely delightful).

The reality is, they’re going to market to me regardless. So, I might as well benefit from relevant ads featuring products I genuinely want. From skincare to accessories, clothing, and household items—though rarely anything kid-related because let’s be real, it’s a me-first approach here—most of my favorite purchases have come from Facebook and Instagram ads.

What’s even better is that once I buy something, I’m bombarded with similar product suggestions! They follow me across various social media platforms and even to the websites I visit. It’s like having a personal shopping assistant! If the timing is right, I might even cancel an order to opt for a more appealing suggestion.

Do I want a trendy kimono dress? They know. How about oversized garments that can only be described as comfortable sacks? Here are more options! Am I into K-pop jewelry? Of course! Do I indulge in all the latest South Korean skincare? Absolutely! Want quirky, tentacle-themed items? They’ve got me covered. Do I need corgi butt pillows with adorable details? YES!

I don’t even have to think twice about it! It taps into my inner collector, and I crave all the shiny, cute, and quirky items available! Sure, not everything turns out as expected, but I’d estimate about 85% of the time, the product meets my expectations. (Though I might be selectively forgetting the few bad experiences I’ve had.)

And the best part? When I post pictures of my purchases on social media, I get compliments! Who doesn’t appreciate a little validation? I may not care if my friends are exaggerating; at my age, I’m here for the positive feedback. I happily thank them and take pride in my shopping choices.

I even expanded my earring collection to maximize my accessorizing potential. If online shopping isn’t designed for fulfilling my desires, then what is?
