This morning, a delightful article caught my eye on social media: “8 Times Sneakers Looked Absolutely Perfect with a Dress.” Only eight instances? Should I be concerned? I dove into the images.
Upon closer inspection and perhaps a touch of unwarranted critique, I concluded that six of the looks were indeed spot-on. Two, however, seemed a bit off. Most featured white sneakers, which clearly means I need to add a pair to my collection—currently brimming with colorful options but lacking the classic white. The comments section, however, was far from supportive. Some responses ranged from the curt “Bah. Nope.” to “Eight times never,” with others deeming it “too ’80s” and suggesting such an outfit is suitable only for private backyards. But I want to flaunt this look beyond my yard. So, is it possible?
Who do I need to ask for approval? Is there someone I can contact?
They say that one of the perks of reaching your 40s is the liberation from caring about others’ opinions. I’m still waiting for that enlightenment. I still care—but perhaps this is my moment to step forward. I’m declaring it boldly: I will never be too old to wear sneakers with a dress, and neither should you. Here are my personal, 49-year-old reasons for embracing this trend:
- Picnics! Time to bring out the Converse and pair them with a breezy sundress.
- Anytime works with Keds. Aren’t Keds the perfect match for any summer dress? I think that would appease the fashion critics.
- Semi-formal summer gatherings. Like that gala for our local independent cinema—I should have attended, strolling across the tented lawn in stylish comfort.
