Why Are Baby High Chairs So Bulky?

Kids may be small, but their furniture often seems oversized. I find myself pondering this daily—whether I’m stubbing my toe on a bathroom stool, maneuvering a tiny table to clean, or just figuring out where to stash it all. Kid furniture manages to be petite yet feel enormous at the same time.

I thought transitioning out of the baby phase would simplify things. I waved goodbye to swings, cradles, and play equipment, but I was mistaken. My ongoing battle with bulky kid furniture continued with the high chair.

Every day is a new struggle—tripping over its legs, snagging my pocket as I pass by, and having to shove it aside just to navigate the kitchen with laundry baskets in hand. After two years, I should be accustomed to it, but it still feels massive.

When I chose this model that folds into a flat, standing position, I believed I was making the right choice for our open layout. The plan was simple: the baby eats, I fold it up, and roll it to the wall. Easy, right?

Except I was pregnant and perhaps a little dazzled by the chic rose gold design. I failed to consider that our “dining area” is merely a corner of our spacious living room, and there aren’t really any walls to tuck it against without sacrificing my beloved buffet. I simply can’t part with that storage, especially for a piece of furniture that I hope will only be around for another year or so.

My daughter is two, and while some toddlers can sit at the table like little adults by this age, mine is a different story. She may be in the 3rd percentile for size, but she’s over the 97th for mischief. Trust me, the high chair is still essential.

So, in my home, the high chair remains the dreaded piece of kid furniture I can’t escape. Despite my frustration, I have to find a way to manage it. I can’t be the only one—what’s the challenging furniture piece in your home?
