Why Adults Who Choose Not to Get Vaccinated Are Hurting Our Children

Over the past year, we’ve all made sacrifices—some more than others. Healthcare professionals, educators, and public health officials have prioritized the needs of the community, the nation, and indeed, the whole planet. Many have lost jobs, and tragically, countless lives have been lost. The impact of this pandemic is overwhelming.

Our children, too, have endured far more than they should have been asked to. They’ve missed out on in-person interactions, said farewell to beloved teachers, and learned how to navigate their lives through tiny screens. When schools finally began to reopen, they donned masks for hours on end, demonstrating remarkable resilience throughout this ordeal.

I have been genuinely impressed by how well most kids have adapted to the challenges of the pandemic—often better than many adults. However, the emotional and mental toll is undeniable.

This is why I feel an intense frustration when I think about those who refuse to get vaccinated due to their personal beliefs. Their decisions are negatively impacting everyone, especially our kids.

After vaccines were rolled out, the number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. decreased significantly, and life started to resemble normalcy again. But then the Delta variant emerged. Because we hadn’t achieved the 70% vaccination rate necessary, it began to spread rapidly. Currently, cases are rising in every state, with 46 states reporting at least a 10% increase in new cases compared to the previous week, according to Johns Hopkins University. Los Angeles County, the largest in the U.S., has experienced a staggering 500% surge in cases in just a month, leading to a reinstatement of mask mandates.

This situation didn’t have to happen. The over 30% of adults who remain unvaccinated are directly contributing to the suffering of our children.

Currently, children under 12 cannot receive the vaccine, meaning that masks and social distancing are their only defenses against the virus. As many school districts make masks optional and social distancing becomes nearly impossible, it’s imperative that adults step up to help combat this devastating virus. Dr. Peter Hotez, a leading vaccinologist, has emphasized the importance of vaccination among adults and older children to protect the youngest members of our population.

The common justification that kids don’t get sick is simply false. In Mississippi, for instance, seven children are in ICU with COVID-19, and two are on ventilators. Dr. Hotez notes that as many as 30% of infected children may develop long-haul COVID-19, which can have severe neurological consequences.

What we’re asking of our kids is simply unacceptable. They’ve sacrificed too much already, placing their own needs aside for the sake of more vulnerable adults. And how are some adults repaying that sacrifice? By refusing to get vaccinated and putting our children’s health at risk.

In short, the vaccines are safe and effective. Let’s not be the reason our kids face even more hardships.
