When My Toddler Took a Tumble from a High Slide

Parenting is filled with daily challenges and, at times, failures. It’s a journey where we strive to do our best, yet often grapple with worries, doubts, and fears. Just when we think we’ve made the right choice, motherhood has a way of knocking us down. This morning was no different, and I’m still feeling the emotional impact of the experience.

Let me share about a specific playground just a short drive from our home. My children and I frequent this spot; it’s usually enjoyable and not too crowded. The only downside? The slide.

From our very first visit, we imposed a rule about this slide. It’s old, high, and a parent’s nightmare. Every time we arrive, my kids plead, “Can we go down the slide, please?” My answer has always been a firm no. Safety first; I can’t let them get hurt.

Today, however, as we arrived at the park, I noticed we had it all to ourselves. The weather was just right, and my kids were happily playing on the swings and monkey bars. After a while, my younger child asked the inevitable question, “Can we try the slide?”

Looking into her eager eyes, I hesitated. I want my kids to be bold and confident, to embrace new experiences. Yet, every instinct screamed for me to say no. But today, I chose to say yes.

I explained the safety rules before we approached the slide. We discussed how to climb the steps carefully and how to sit properly before sliding down. With my heart racing, I finally let them go. As they ascended the steps, I felt a mix of anxiety and pride. They were following the rules, and I was hopeful.

But then, my two-year-old stumbled at the top, somersaulting off the slide and landing on the ground. My heart sank as I heard the simultaneous cries from my son, my daughter, and myself.

Thankfully, he was unharmed. The soft ground cushioned his fall, and after a few hugs and snacks, he was ready to play again—except for that slide, which I now wished to remove myself.

As parents, we often face moments of doubt and failure, even when we strive for the right decisions. It’s important to remember that we’re not alone in this journey. Sharing our experiences helps, as does understanding that there is no definitive guide for parenting.

A wise friend once advised me during my pregnancy to trust my instincts. She emphasized that loving choices are the right choices, and this has remained with me throughout my parenting journey. Letting my kids try the slide came from a place of love, even if the outcome wasn’t what I expected.

If you find yourself wrestling with a recent parenting misstep or decision, remember that you’re not isolated in this. We all navigate through failures, and as long as our decisions stem from love, we’re on the right path.

Parenting is a journey filled with uncertainties and moments of failure. One mother’s experience of allowing her children to try a high slide teaches valuable lessons about love, trust, and the importance of embracing new experiences, even when they don’t go as planned.
