Dear Community,
As I sit here watching my son play soccer for his middle school team, I can’t help but reflect on the challenges many families face in supporting their children’s extracurricular activities. This is his first season, and for many of his teammates, it’s a new experience as well.
While we adhere to the coach’s policy that prohibits parents from attending practice, we dutifully take him to training sessions each week. However, this week poses a dilemma: there are three home games scheduled, and as dedicated parents, we want to show our support. Yet, with ticket prices set at $5 per person, the cost adds up quickly. For our family of four, that’s $60 just for this week — a significant portion of our weekly food budget.
In our town, where we contend with the highest poverty rate in Virginia and an unemployment rate of 9.3%, these expenses can be overwhelming. The average income in our community hovers around $20,132 annually, translating to about $9.68 per hour before taxes. Many families in our area rely on programs like the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which provides free meals for students from low-income households.
During PTA meetings, the emphasis is often on the importance of parental involvement. We strive to support our school, educators, and community, but it’s crucial that you consider the circumstances of those around you. If financial barriers prevent parents from attending, the bleachers remain empty, and our children miss out on the encouragement they deserve.
Our kids are the future of our community, and we must work together to ensure they have the necessary support to thrive. Finding a more inclusive approach to attendance at school events is essential for fostering a positive environment where all families can participate.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Parent Who Can’t Be in the Stands

In summary, the costs associated with attending school sporting events can be a barrier for many families. It’s important for schools and communities to recognize these challenges and work towards solutions that enable all parents to support their children’s activities.
