What to Anticipate from Your Kindergartner

Dear parents of new kindergarteners: As a seasoned educator with years of experience, I would like to share what your little ones will likely be up to in school, so you know what to expect.

  1. Your child may walk into the restroom and leave the door wide open while taking care of business. You might even catch them singing a tune during their visit.
  2. Expect to see your child engaging in some rather unrefined habits, like picking their nose in class for several months. After enough reminders from the teacher to “Get a Tissue!!”, they’ll eventually learn to do it discreetly with a hand in front of their face. Those who master this are undoubtedly destined for greatness!
  3. There’s a chance your little one might forget about bathroom breaks during recess, leading to some unfortunate accidents.
  4. You might find them emerging from the restroom with their pants around their ankles—oops!
  5. Throughout the year, your child could accidentally call their teacher “Mom,” “Dad,” or even “Grandma.” The first two will likely bring laughter, while the last may result in a startled reaction and a mad dash for some hand lotion to smooth out those wrinkles!
  6. Brace yourself for your child sharing some rather embarrassing stories about you and your family. The teacher will chuckle, make a mental note for the upcoming family picnic, and continue on. They know better than to use real names when recounting these tales, as their own kids are probably doing the same in another classroom.
  7. Your child may tattle on their best friend one moment, throw a mean face their way, and then happily play together with Legos just minutes later.
  8. On the playground, expect your little one to take a tumble, get pushed, or scrape a knee, only to spring back up and jump right back into the fun.
  9. If you have a son, be prepared for bathroom mishaps where he forgets to aim properly, resulting in wet pants and maybe even a playful toss of his soggy underwear at the teacher!
  10. Ultimately, your child will find a special place in their teacher’s heart. The joy of witnessing your child read their first word, write their first sentence, or make their first friend is what makes it all worthwhile.
