What I Wish to Express to My Son’s Sixth Grade Teachers During Teacher Appreciation Week

As a parent, sending my oldest child to middle school last fall felt like a monumental challenge. I realize that many kids navigate sixth grade without issue, so I might be overreacting. Still, ever since he was born, I’ve had a lingering anxiety about this transition. I believe I share this sentiment with many others; the middle school experience often feels like a series of unfortunate events—awkward moments, emerging cliques, and a whirlwind of adolescent emotions.

Reflecting on my own middle school years, I was fortunate enough to be somewhat in the middle of the social spectrum, which spared me from the worst of it. However, as a parent, I’ve heard alarming tales of today’s middle school landscape—rumors about inappropriate behavior, and the challenges kids face. After his first day, my son came home saying he now understands why the band Guns N’ Roses sang “Welcome to the Jungle.” Not the best start!

Fortunately, his perception improved dramatically as the year progressed. Now, as we celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week, I have several heartfelt messages for his sixth-grade teachers:

I appreciate you, even if we haven’t met.

This year has been a new experience for our family, with my son encountering eight different teachers throughout the semester. Due to my responsibilities to his younger siblings, I haven’t been able to engage with the school community as I would like, which means I don’t know many of his teachers personally. This often results in a lack of individual appreciation during Teacher Appreciation Week, as it can be overwhelming to consider gifts for so many educators. However, I want to express my gratitude for the care and dedication you show my son every day. His first year in middle school has exceeded my expectations, largely thanks to your efforts.

Your impact is profound, perhaps more than I realized.

This year, my son delved into Shakespeare, crafted a manta ray out of felt and pipe cleaners, began learning algebra, and even participated in debates. He built a motor and discovered a passion for volleyball and languages. I didn’t fully appreciate how transformative middle school could be in enriching a child’s education until now. I recognize the significance of the teacher who introduces students to literature and complex subjects. Thank you for fostering his love of learning.

Your role is incredibly challenging, and I admire you for it.

As a parent of two tweens, I can’t imagine facing a classroom full of developing young minds daily. While there are rewarding moments, the challenges are immense. The disparity between teachers’ pay and their essential role in shaping young lives is disheartening. You are all heroes in my eyes—truly the unsung champions of education.

To express my gratitude, I provided a cake today for a PTA-sponsored event in your honor. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to label it, but perhaps the anonymity allowed you to feel appreciated by a broader community. While it seems we shouldn’t need a designated week to celebrate teachers, I’m grateful for the opportunity to reflect on your hard work and dedication. Your efforts often go unnoticed, yet they are vital to our children’s success.

This is my way of acknowledging your invaluable contributions.

In summary, as we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my son’s sixth-grade teachers for their dedication, the profound impact they have on their students, and the challenges they face daily. Your hard work does not go unnoticed, and I appreciate everything you do.
