Waiting for Baby: A Letter to My Future Child

Dear Little One,

Hello! It’s me, your mom. I am so eager to meet you! Your nursery is nearly finished in our new home. While leaving the city was bittersweet, we wanted to ensure that you and your brother have access to top-notch schools. Here, we have a spacious playroom, a large yard, and four bedrooms waiting for you, your brother, and maybe even another sibling someday.

We’ve been eagerly anticipating your arrival. What’s taking so long, sweetheart? Are you being considerate of the other first-time moms in our circle? That’s thoughtful of you, but honestly, it seems like everyone is either expecting or has already welcomed their first or second child. You should have seen our Christmas cards this year—half of them were birth announcements! You won’t have to worry about stepping on any toes when you finally arrive.

Are you trying to teach me a valuable lesson about patience? I know it’s not my strongest trait. I manage just fine with your big brother, but throw me into a traffic jam or a tech glitch, and my composure goes out the window.

Do you plan on being just like me, taking your sweet time to get here? I’ve always been a slowpoke. Grandma used to joke that I was always the last one to leave school.

Are you worried that our love for your brother means there’s no room for you? That’s simply not true! My affection for him doesn’t lessen my excitement to welcome you into our lives. In fact, the love we have for your big brother is exactly why we want you to join our family. I can’t wait to see the two of you grow up together.

Are you concerned that being in my belly will make me feel sick? Don’t worry; we have three bathrooms in this house. I’d gladly pay the price of nausea for you!

And if you’re thinking you might cause me back pain, well, that’s what prenatal yoga is for. I can’t wait to enroll!

Are you anxious that I might be disappointed if you’re a boy (which I suspect you will be) instead of a girl (as your dad believes)? Little man, I will embrace you wholeheartedly! Plus, I won’t have to learn the ins and outs of girl care.

Know this: I think about you constantly. Every day, more than I can admit. I daydream about cuddling with you after nursing, watching you take your first steps, and fighting back tears on your first day of Kindergarten.

So, why the wait? Why is it taking so long for me to get pregnant? Some days, I fear that the conception and birth of your brother was a fluke, and that the universe has decided I won’t have more children. Please prove me wrong and join us. There is an abundance of love waiting for you.

Your big brother will start preschool this fall, and Grandpa asked me what I would do during that time. I would love to spend it with you, but until then, I’ll be right here…waiting.

With love,
Mom
