“John Lewis must be smiling from above.”
Throughout the week, ballots from crucial swing states in the presidential election have been steadily reported. However, at around 4:30 AM Eastern Time, Georgia turned blue as Joe Biden took the lead in the vote count. Observers quickly noted that the newly counted absentee ballots responsible for Biden’s surge originated from Clayton County—the district represented by the late Congressman John Lewis.
Lewis was a champion of civil rights in America, embodying the kindness and decency that have often been absent from political discourse in recent years. This makes the moment all the more meaningful.
He was frequently targeted by Trump’s signature bullying tactics. Trump once described Clayton County and Lewis’s district as “horrible,” and he notably declined to attend Lewis’s funeral after the congressman passed away in July.
In a discussion with Axios, Trump attempted to justify his absence, but his remarks only reinforced his reputation for insensitivity. “He didn’t come to my inauguration. He didn’t come to my State of the Union speeches. And that’s OK, that’s his right. And again, nobody has done more for Black Americans than I have. He should’ve come. I think he made a big mistake,” Trump said about Lewis. “He was a person that devoted a lot of energy and lot of heart to civil rights. But there were many others also.”
This is the man who led the iconic 1965 civil rights march in Selma, and Trump tried to minimize that—along with Lewis’s numerous other remarkable achievements. Lewis dedicated his life to combating racism and fostering unity, while Trump exploited his death to promote his agenda and further deepen divisions. John Lewis was a hero, without question. Trump embodies cowardice, racism, and bullying. The two men are not comparable—not in the slightest.
As the final votes are tallied today, data analysts believe it is improbable that Trump will regain the lead in Georgia or in Pennsylvania, where Biden has also surged ahead this morning. Perhaps we are on the brink of a new era, where politics prioritize serving all Americans—something Trump never grasped as part of his role.

In the wake of the 2020 presidential election, votes from John Lewis’s district in Georgia contributed to Joe Biden’s lead over Donald Trump. The late congressman, a symbol of civil rights, was often disparaged by Trump, who failed to honor his legacy. As votes continue to be counted, experts suggest Biden’s lead is secure, signaling a possible shift towards a more inclusive political landscape.
