A high school valedictorian from Dallas has gained significant attention for her bold move during graduation. Madison Carter, the 2021 valedictorian of Lakeview High School, made headlines after she chose to abandon her pre-approved speech in favor of a passionate address advocating for abortion rights.
During the ceremony on May 30, Carter addressed the audience about Texas’ newly enacted “heartbeat bill,” which prohibits abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy. This law, signed by Governor Mark Thompson on May 19, garnered widespread controversy for its lack of exceptions for cases of rape or incest, providing only for “medical emergencies.”
Carter began her speech in a typical fashion but swiftly transitioned to discussing the implications of the bill, emphasizing that many women may not even realize they are pregnant at six weeks. She expressed, “Before they have the chance to determine if they are emotionally, physically, and financially prepared to carry a pregnancy to term, their decision is made for them by someone else. A decision that will impact the rest of their lives.”
“I have aspirations, dreams, and ambitions. Every girl here does,” she continued. “We have dedicated our lives to building our futures, and without our input, our ability to shape those futures has been taken away. I hope you can sense how devastating and dehumanizing it is to lose control over your own body.”
She concluded her speech by urging her peers to “raise their voices” and emphasized, “I refuse to use this platform to promote silence or complacency when there is an ongoing struggle for our rights. A struggle that affects your sisters, mothers, and daughters.”
The bill was passed by the Texas legislature and is set to go into effect in September. Carter later expressed to a local publication that she believed graduation was a vital platform to reach a diverse audience on this critical issue. “It was important to me that this message was heard, and I felt it was necessary to speak out,” she noted.
Despite her initial concerns about how the speech would be received, Carter felt it was a risk worth taking. She remarked that she never anticipated the speech would gain such widespread visibility, calling the experience “overwhelming” but “exciting.”
