To the Mama at the Gym with the Crying Baby: Don’t Lose Heart. Keep Coming Back.

Hey there, fellow gym mama! If you’re like me, you know exactly what it feels like to juggle workouts with a little one in tow. It’s Friday, and even though I’ve hit the gym every day this week, I still haven’t completed the full workout I envisioned. Just the other day, my little one managed to have an epic diaper blowout on the way to the gym—let’s just say it was quite the mess, and I forgot to pack a spare outfit. Isn’t that just the way? Retail therapy called, and I ended up spending the first half-hour of my gym time in Baby Gap instead.

The next day, I was determined to try again, but my workout was cut short by a very upset baby needing my attention. As I was leaving, I noticed another mom doing the same. She looked like she might be returning to the gym for the first time since having her baby, and I could tell it wasn’t going smoothly for her either. I wanted to encourage her to keep at it, but with our little ones wailing, it was hard to find the right moment.

Getting Back into a Routine

Getting back into a gym routine after having a baby is no small feat. Maybe you’ve never set foot in a gym before, or perhaps you’ve found new motivation to lead a healthier life. Maybe you’re struggling with body image issues (and I hope you’re being kind to yourself). Or maybe you worked hard to stay fit during your pregnancy but didn’t anticipate how challenging it would be to exercise with a tiny human attached to you all the time.

Regardless of your reasons for being there, I commend you for showing up, baby in tow. I can only imagine you’re not getting enough sleep, and you’re probably wishing for faster results. But remember, you just grew a human! It’s okay to take a moment for yourself. Investing in your well-being ultimately makes you a better parent.

Embrace the Journey

I know your back might ache from constantly holding your baby, and you may contemplate skipping the gym altogether in favor of a strict diet of lettuce. Please, don’t limit yourself to that! You might feel clumsy during your first push-ups, thinking you’ll never shake that “beached whale” feeling, but trust me, you don’t look like one.

Making it to the gym often feels like a monumental challenge. When does that ease up? Sometimes, you might feel like you’re building biceps just by carrying your baby around, and you wonder if hitting the gym is even necessary. You’re right—your arms look great! But treat yourself and enjoy that cookie you’ve been craving.

Please bring that crying baby back tomorrow. Mama at the gym, regardless of your shape, size, or fitness level, you’re doing an amazing job. The journey of working out post-baby is vastly different from what it was before, but it’s more rewarding than ever.
