A few weeks back, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a high school state finals track event. A friend’s son was competing, and I couldn’t resist the chance to witness him chase a state title.
The excitement from his parents was palpable as we awaited his race. We cheered enthusiastically during his event, and when he crossed the finish line in first place, my eyes immediately went to his parents. Tears streamed down his father’s face while his mother squealed with joy. The first thing their son did was look up to the stands, searching for his family. They were right there, and it struck me—this is where they have always been, and will continue to be. It gave me chills.
From the moment our children achieve their first milestones, we are their loudest supporters. We celebrated with cheers as they rolled over, sat up, crawled, walked, and mastered various skills. Each time they accomplished something new, they looked for us, wanting to see our proud faces in the crowd.
And what about those moments when they faced setbacks, such as striking out or falling off the balance beam? Did they still search for us? Yes, they did. And we were there, cheering for them, no matter the outcome.
As my eldest son prepares to graduate from high school this month, I will be there to celebrate his achievement. But my role as his supporter doesn’t end there; it evolves. While the days of tee-ball and tennis matches may be behind us, my cheers will continue from a distance—the sidelines of his life. Even if I’m not physically present, my prayers and good thoughts will always be there, reinforcing that I’m his biggest fan, no matter where life takes him.
I’ll be present when he faces heartbreak for the first time, encouraging him to heal and move forward. I’ll support him through betrayal, urging him to find forgiveness. When he encounters challenges in his career, I’ll be there to remind him that temporary setbacks don’t define his future. I’ll cheer him on as he navigates the complexities of life, reminding him to appreciate the good amidst the difficult.
As he walks down the aisle, I’ll be cheering him on to be the kind of husband his father has been to me. When he achieves his dreams, I’ll encourage him to find gratitude amidst the pressures of life. And when he holds his own child for the first time, I’ll remind him to savor every moment and cherish the joys of parenthood.
In those stands, he will find not just me, but also his father and the rest of our family, all ready to cheer him on.
