This Year, I’m Celebrating Valentine’s Day with My Family

I absolutely adore Valentine’s Day! The celebration of love fills my heart with joy. I’m not interested in hearing from those who dismiss it as just a commercial holiday; I believe in celebrating love every chance we get—so keep your negativity to yourself! I’m all about the heart-shaped treats, quirky decorations, classic gifts, and special date nights.

For as long as I can remember, my husband has been my Valentine. Since I was 18, he has been my one and only. However, he is currently deployed, and while I can’t disclose the details of his location or return, I can share that he’s far away, and I miss him every single day. This Valentine’s season is especially tough without him, as he knows just how much I cherish this day.

Even though I won’t get to enjoy a romantic dinner or a slow dance to our wedding song, I refuse to let that stop me from celebrating one of my favorite holidays. This year, it will just be my little ones and me at home, so I’m transforming Valentine’s Day into a family celebration. I’m pouring all my Valentine spirit into creating a memorable day for my kids.

Crafting Fun

Since my husband’s deployment, I’ve dived into crafting like never before. Thanks to a secondhand Cricut machine from a friend, I’m having a blast making cute shirts for my kids to wear during our special dinner. I decided on the word “loved” across the front, so they can wear them beyond just Valentine’s Day.

Delicious Dinner

Speaking of dinner, I’m preparing their favorite meal: breakfast! We’ll indulge in bacon and eggs, along with heart-shaped waffles topped with strawberries, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

Thoughtful Gifts

I’m keeping gifts simple this year but will be treating each of them to a few special items to make the day feel extraordinary. It’s about showing them that I care about their interests and understand who they are.

I stumbled upon a wonderful idea from another mom on Pinterest who writes little love notes on heart-shaped paper for her kids and sticks them on their bedroom doors leading up to Valentine’s Day. We also visited a craft store together to pick out supplies for decorating their Valentine boxes for school, going all out this time instead of my usual half-hearted effort. Their schoolmates will receive Valentine’s that match the theme of their boxes.

I’ll also encourage them to write love letters to their grandparents. And, of course, we are sending a care package to their dad so he can feel our love while he’s away. Even though he’s far, we want to remind him that we’re thinking of him, even if Valentine’s Day is more my style than his.

Just because my romantic partner is thousands of miles away doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a little Cupid-inspired fun together as a family!
