When it comes to veggies, not many excite kids, and broccoli often gets a bad rap. However, my little ones are usually okay with it—especially when it’s cooked enough to go down quickly. I typically roast it in our toaster oven, which means chopping, drizzling with olive oil, and more often than not, I end up browning the crowns. (Not exactly a culinary expert here!) Over time, I’ve picked up various tips for enhancing its flavor, such as Kristen Bell’s delicious crushed-pretzel broccoli (which, let’s be honest, is even better with Parmesan). Some parents swear by serving raw broccoli with dip or hummus, which I totally respect, but I find that older kids tend to enjoy crudités more.
So, I was completely captivated by this new TikTok hack for cooking broccoli. It’s pure genius! #showmethelifehack for cooking broccoli.
User @MaddieCooks, responding to #showmethelifehack, demonstrates cooking an entire head of broccoli upside down in boiling water. If you visualize broccoli as a tree, she submerges the top with the branches while leaving the trunk above the water like a handle. After boiling, she effortlessly lifts it out by the cool trunk and neatly slices off the cooked crowns as if she’s using a hot knife through butter.
This technique is ideal for softening broccoli for baby-led weaning, making me wish I had a little one around to try it with. Additionally, it makes the vegetable tender enough to blend into mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, or to mix with rice, helping to “hide” it among other flavors. Of course, it’s also great for kids to snack on as is, though I’d still sprinkle on a bit of salt.
