Since when do women require permission to make purchases?

Have you ever come across something so absurd that you had to do a double take, only to confirm that, yes, it really did say what you thought? That was my reaction when I strolled past a shop in my hometown of Minnesota. The women-owned boutique, Chic Mamas, caters to mothers in the suburbs, selling clothing, jewelry, and home décor. In the window, a sign in large, eye-catching letters reads: “Your husband called, he said buy what you want.”

Excuse me, what?

Does that sign really suggest that I need to consult my husband before treating myself to a purchase? Should I tidy up the house and make dinner first before checking if I can buy this cute candle? Have we somehow time-traveled back to the 1950s without me realizing it?

I tried to think of the possible lighthearted intentions behind the store owner’s message, but honestly, it’s not amusing. The sign implies that women need their spouse’s approval to make financial decisions. Last I checked, women are dynamic, hardworking individuals. Many of us are the primary breadwinners, juggling jobs, family duties, and community engagements. We run marathons, support charities, and coordinate school events. We work full-time and still manage to volunteer for various causes.

When it comes to shopping, we certainly don’t need anyone’s permission! Women currently earn the majority of college degrees in the U.S., and we represent nearly half of the labor force. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, we also own close to ten million businesses, including this boutique. A staggering 70% of mothers with kids under 18 are in the workforce, contributing to a robust economy.

This sign is not only offensive; it sets back gender equality by decades. While it’s true that many couples discuss significant purchases together, assuming that women need to ask for permission to buy something for themselves is simply outdated. We are independent women with our own financial means and decision-making capabilities. We don’t need approval to make choices about our own lives.

In summary, the sign at Chic Mamas is a throwback to a time when women were expected to seek permission for their purchases, which is both ridiculous and regressive. Women today are empowered and capable of making their own financial decisions without needing approval from anyone.
