They Are All My Children

In my journey through life, I have been blessed with over a thousand children, each unique in their own right. They come from diverse backgrounds—some are tall, others short; some are black, others white; they embody a spectrum of identities and experiences, including those who are blue-eyed, pierced, gay, autistic, humorous, dramatic, brilliant, dyslexic, talented, transgender, outgoing, artistic, and athletic.

I have had the honor of witnessing their growth, from crafting their first sentences to standing tall against life’s challenges. I have shared in their grief and embraced their sorrows as if they were my own. There have been countless mornings where I have risen before dawn or stayed awake under the moonlight, ensuring I complete my daily responsibilities so they could progress in their lives. I have stood resolutely beside them, urging them to confront reality and inspiring them to strive for their best selves.

Every day, my children present me with new challenges. Each one has distinct needs and perspectives, along with unique pains that require healing. It is my privilege to assist them in articulating their stories, unveiling their potentials, and learning to navigate a world that often tells them they are insufficient. To me, they are always enough—capable of moving mountains and changing the world if they so desire. I hold an unwavering belief in my children; at times, the weight of my optimism for them serves as the only anchor amidst an increasingly tumultuous and painful world.

I have weathered the storm of societal pressures that often tell me my efforts are inadequate, questioning my methods and intentions. I have confronted the relentless tide that threatens to erase the love and creativity I strive to impart to my children daily. I fight relentlessly to provide them with what they truly require, which can never be dictated by external forces attempting to diminish my worth. I strive for understanding and respect from those who do not share my experiences yet seek to influence my path.

I have dedicated countless hours and resources to enhance my children’s lives, often sacrificing my own needs in the process. Many nights, I have awakened at 3 AM, consumed by thoughts of ensuring their safety and well-being. Each day, I give them my lunch, my joy, my tears, and my heart.

I do all of this because every one of them is mine. They are my children. And I? I am their teacher.
