This morning, my son plopped down at the piano wearing his pajamas, barefoot, and donning a baseball cap, pouring his heart into the music. It’s become a daily ritual for him, and he absolutely adores it.
Just a year ago, he was begging to quit. Getting him to practice felt like an uphill battle. Our lives were crammed with activities, often leaving us in a frenzied rush as we tried to maintain a hectic schedule for our family of six. When we were home, he longed for downtime. The piano was just another task on our endless to-do list. We were always on the go, and often running on fumes.
But the relentless pace has slowed over the past year.
Now, my little guy hops on the piano bench in his PJs and plays every morning before breakfast. He sneaks in practice between remote school sessions and assignments, and if he walks by the piano, he stops to play. He’s constantly making music these days. Without the pressure of our former over-scheduled lives, he plays purely for joy!
As I sit and listen to him today, I can hear how much he’s improved. His fingers fly over the keys, and he leans in, fully immersed in the music.
And I find myself pondering the same question: Where do we go from here?
I long for the days before COVID, yet I also hesitate to return to that chaotic lifestyle.
Of course, I wish for the pandemic to end, for the suffering it has caused to cease, and for the healing power of togetherness to flourish. However, as I listen to the melodies echoing from the piano, I can’t help but reflect on the frantic pace of life we once led.
As vaccinations roll out and we inch closer to a semblance of “normal,” this moment is ripe for intention. Perhaps we can choose how we reintegrate into our old routines. What lessons have we absorbed? What aspects will we hold onto? What will we leave behind? Can we embrace a slower pace once life fully reopens? Will we be more mindful of our priorities? What were we really racing toward back then?
These piano notes are telling a story and prompting me to consider the next chapter.
Where do we go from here? And what exactly were we rushing toward before?
