The Trump Issue is a Dealbreaker for Me

I recently engaged in conversation with a seemingly pleasant mom at the park. She appeared great, and I felt a flicker of hope for a potential Mom Friend. Finding companions becomes increasingly challenging once your children outgrow the baby stage, and I often find myself desperate for connection—literally wearing a sign that screams, “BE MY FRIEND NOW!” Hence, I strive to remain open-minded about varying perspectives and parenting styles. Yet, as our discussion unfolded, it became evident that we held drastically different views on parenting and life in general, but that wasn’t a dealbreaker. Then she mentioned The Trump Issue.

The Trump Issue is a dealbreaker for me.

I can tolerate your quirks. I can overlook your dismissive attitude towards my writing career, which you consider merely a hobby, as long as our kids aren’t hitting one another with sticks and your car resembles mine in its chaotic state. I can even grin and nod through your gun obsession, even if your child, who my kid adores, starts spouting pro-NRA slogans in my home. We both know that our children are raised with a desire to dismantle the gun culture while we smile politely.

I can even muster patience for your multi-level marketing pitches disguised as parenting advice during playdates. You might be obsessed with Disney, and we can bond over the glitter mess that comes with it. If you look at me like I’ve committed a sin for letting my kids listen to Hamilton, simply because it contains a couple of curse words, well, I can deal with that. Generally, you’re nice enough. I can even manage your personal beliefs if you can accept mine.

But once The Trump Issue arises, I’m out.

The reason The Trump Issue is a dealbreaker is that it represents a mindset I find utterly intolerable. First and foremost, it’s fundamentally racist. Do you remember Charlottesville? That was the moment Trump failed to denounce white supremacists after violence erupted during an event protesting a Confederate statue. His infamous phrase, “There’s blame on both sides,” equated the protestors advocating for change with those promoting hate.

Let’s not forget his history as a birther. He once shut down the government for 35 days to secure funding for his absurd border wall, leaving countless individuals without pay. He allegedly referred to African nations as “shithole countries” and suggested that Nigerian immigrants wouldn’t go back to their homes after seeing America.

Trump has separated children from their families. Let that sink in. I’ve witnessed the traumatic aftermath firsthand: children who are terrified, dealing with severe abandonment issues, and unable to sleep alone. Supporting Trump means condoning the tearing apart of families. According to reports, the ACLU highlighted that at least seven children have died in custody at the border.

There’s a German saying: if one Nazi is at a table and ten others are engaging with him, there are eleven Nazis at that table. If you can tolerate Trump, you’re not paying attention.

He has rolled back environmental protections to the point where I find myself yearning for the Nixon era. The Trump Issue embodies a blowhard mentality, characterized by impulsive decisions and childlike rages. He has faced serious accusations of misconduct and was impeached for attempting to manipulate foreign powers into interfering in our elections. Reports suggest he prioritizes the interests of billionaires while neglecting the needs of the impoverished.

If you support him, you are willfully blind, choosing to ignore the consequences of that support. I refuse to surround myself with people who lack critical thinking skills, and I certainly don’t want my children exposed to those who do. The Trump Issue is a firm dealbreaker for me. If you find yourself in support of him, please don’t knock on my door. It’s closed, and the curtains are drawn—no exceptions.

In summary, The Trump Issue signifies a level of thought and behavior that I cannot tolerate, particularly around my children. It’s a clear delineation point for me in determining the people I want to associate with.
