Oh wow, I had the best sleep ever! I think I woke up Mommy five times to tell her about those spooky shadows in my room that were probably just the moonlight making funny shapes. I figured she missed me anyway, so it was nice to keep her company. When she gave me that super tight hug, I knew I was right. Clearly, she needs me around at night.
I had a really cool dream about a bear, some swings, and a crooked house. I can’t wait to tell my parents all about it—it’s going to take at least three hours because I have so much to share! They love hearing my stories. And I adore my own voice too! Singing is the best. I’ll kick things off right now.
Today is my first day of preschool, and it’s going to be so much fun! I need to look amazing. There’s no way I’m wearing that blue dress Mommy picked out for me. Sure, it looked pretty in the store when she was asking, “Promise me you’ll actually wear it?” But now it just looks sad and I swear I can smell her expectations on it. Yuck! Plus, I decided I don’t like blue anymore, not since yesterday.
I found the most perfect outfit! It’s a special day, so I absolutely need wings, gloves, a crown, all my hair barrettes, my Christmas dress, and even my snow boots—because why not? This outfit sparkles, which is amazing, and it twirls beautifully. I feel like a princess, and all my dreams are coming true! I can just picture fairies crying to create this outfit, and I bet unicorns are super jealous of how cool I look right now.
I’m going to make a grand entrance on the stairs like a true princess at a magical ball. That’s exactly what I am!
Oh, Mommy looks kind of tired this morning. I should probably tell her that to help her out. She’s looking a bit rough, and I think she might have a baby in her tummy. I’ll bring it up later when we’re at the grocery store.
She never dresses up, and I feel really bad for her. It’s always black jeans and old sneakers for her, even though I caught a glimpse of those shiny red high heels in her closet. When I grow up to be a mommy, I’m going to wear ball gowns, beautiful wedding dresses, and bright red high heels every single day. I won’t let my dreams of being the most gorgeous fairy lady ever fade away. Or maybe I’ll choose to be a mermaid—I saw one once, and she was glittery!
Oh look, Daddy seems well-rested today. They’ve finally noticed me standing here on the stairs. I’m giving them my shy smile, like, “Oh! I didn’t see you there, Mommy and Daddy. But now that you’re here, you can admire my fabulousness.”
They’re looking at me with a bit of confusion. Mommy says, “You look very, um, colorful?” She looks tired when she says this. “Are you ever going to wear that new dress, or should I return it?”
I ponder the new dress for a moment, remembering how magical it looked when it was hanging up. I can tell by her expression that I need to be careful with my answer.
“Maybe tomorrow?” And with that, I begin to twirl around happily.
Parenting Note:
These moments actually happened. I hope that one day I can harness all her creative energy into something great for the world—perhaps she’ll become the next president or even the next Beyoncé. When we meet at the grocery store, my child in an Elsa costume and yours looking like an extra in a toddler circus, we’ll share a knowing glance, understanding the struggles that went into leaving the house this morning.
I see you with your circus of a child. Good luck!
