A Moment of Pride
The photographer of the now-famous image of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s daughter, Maya, shared her reflections on capturing this pivotal moment during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings. In an essay for TODAY, she expressed her desire to “show representation and document the historic event from my perspective as a Black woman.”
Throughout a challenging week of hearings marked by overt sexism and racism, one image of Maya smiling proudly at her mother stood out and quickly went viral. Sarahbeth Maney, a photography fellow at the New York Times, spoke about the significance of the photo and its impact on her as a Black woman. The image, which can also be found on Maney’s Twitter and in a New York Times feature, represents a powerful moment that resonates deeply.
“When I take photographs, I attempt to capture the emotions behind the visuals,” Maney shared. “I seek those intimate moments that convey the atmosphere within the room.” As she focused on the hearing, her attention was drawn to Maya, who radiated pride as she watched her mother. The admiration and hope in Maya’s expression inspired Maney to snap the picture, feeling that she had encapsulated an important moment.
Maney recounted how the image gave her chills, prompting her to share it after realizing it was being circulated without credit. “After a long day, I received a message from a Times reporter suggesting I tweet the photo myself since others were sharing it without acknowledging me,” she recalled. “I hesitated but ultimately decided to share it, and it took off from there. I’m glad I did.”
Through her work, Maney aims to inspire other Black girls to explore photography. “There is a lack of representation of Black women in photojournalism, and I hope to open doors for more to enter this field. It’s challenging to be the only one, but I aspire for future generations to have a different experience.”
