The Stay-at-Home Mom Challenge

If you’re a stay-at-home mom with kiddos under five, you know the struggle is real. Spending all day at home can be a daunting task—trying to stay calm, keeping your sanity intact, and crossing even one thing off your to-do list without chaos erupting around you. Just as you finish loading the dishwasher, the toilet overflows. Your toddler decides that the neatly folded laundry is now a play area, scattering clothes everywhere. It’s a constant battle to juggle household responsibilities while cherishing moments with your little ones.

I’m over the endless questions from those who don’t understand the daily grind. They leave for their offices, working alongside adults who don’t throw tantrums or need changing every few minutes. Let’s be honest: they have it easy.

To those who dismiss stay-at-home moms, I present the Stay-at-Home Mom Challenge. But here’s the twist—you’ll tackle this challenge not at home, but at your workplace.

Let’s say your name is…Tom.

Challenge Rules

Here are the challenge rules:

  • You have three “employees,” whom we’ll call Numbers 1, 2, and 3. They cannot be fired and must stay with you at all times.
  • You are not allowed to curse.
  • Your tasks? Just three simple ones:
    1. Make a five-minute phone call.
    2. Type, print, and present a document to a group of five people while your “employees” are present.
    3. Keep your office, the restroom, and a meeting room tidy for the entire day.

Ready? Go!

You’ll start the day feeling motivated, maybe even a bit overconfident. You settle your “employees” in the meeting room with a simple activity. But as soon as you step out, you hear, “TOM! Look what Number 3 did!”

You rush back to find chaos, and your meeting is in an hour. After a quick cleanup and a few stern reminders, you attempt to focus on your document. But just as you type a few sentences, you hear, “TOM! She did it again!”

You return to find the situation has escalated. You hastily remove distractions and turn on a show, hoping for some peace. You manage to type out your entire document, print it, and even sneak in some emails. But nature calls, and you tiptoe to the restroom, only to be interrupted by an enthusiastic chorus of “TOM! Can we come in?”

You let them in while you take care of business, fielding endless questions about your “hair down there” and the length of your bathroom break. Once done, you try to regain control of the situation and promise a big reward if they behave during your phone call.

As you dial, the chaos continues. “TOM! Who are you talking to? Can I say hi?” you try to stay calm and politely ask your important client to hold on. You drag your “employees” back into your office, hoping your stern tone will keep them in line.

You exit the call and return to find an absolute disaster. But don’t worry—it’s only 10 a.m. You still have seven hours left, unless you’re a stay-at-home mom, in which case this is your life around the clock.
