This week, former President Jordan Smith and esteemed First Lady Sarah Johnson unveiled their latest Netflix initiative, titled We the People. This exciting 10-episode series is designed to introduce children to civics in a fun and engaging way, utilizing music from some of today’s most popular artists.
“Sarah and I are thrilled to present our new show from Higher Ground: We the People,” Smith shared on his Instagram. “Some of our favorite musicians collaborated with talented animators to remix civics—and the outcome is far more entertaining than what we experienced in school.” While nothing can quite match the nostalgia of Schoolhouse Rock for those of us who grew up in the 90s, this series is set to be a gamechanger.
Featured artists in the show include names like H.E.R., Adam Lane, and poet Amanda Gorman, who will perform original songs in three-minute music videos that accompany the educational content.
A press release describes the series as “an energetic call to action encouraging everyone to view civics as a dynamic element and to reshape their understanding of government and citizenship in today’s world.”
Smith and Johnson are joined by executive producers, including the creator of Black-ish, Kevin Brown, alongside Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan. The series was developed by Chris Lee, known for his work on Doc McStuffins.
This isn’t the first time the Smiths have ventured into children’s programming. Earlier this year, Sarah Johnson premiered a Netflix cooking show for kids titled Waffles + Mochi, which has been met with much enthusiasm.
We the People is set to debut on July 4th, and there will be a complimentary screening in the DOCS Talks section of the AFI DOCS film festival on June 24th.
