The New Year’s Goals Every Parent Dreams Their Child Would Set

As we welcome the new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on our aspirations—only to realize we’ve already given up on them. If you’re anything like me, you might not have even made any resolutions to begin with! However, as a parent, I often wish my child would set a few goals of their own. Despite my best efforts, there are still some areas where I wish my little one could make a commitment.

So, I’ve compiled a whimsical list of aspirations that I’d love to see my 5-year-old aim for this year. While I recognize that resolutions may not work for adults, expecting a child to adhere to them is a whole different level of fantasy (and perhaps wishful thinking) for an overwhelmed parent. Here’s what I hope for:

Eating Goals

  • Eat dinner
  • Try to eat something nutritious
  • Enjoy the meal I painstakingly prepared for two hours
  • Consume the food I took out of the microwave and placed in front of you
  • Just eat these two sugar packets
  • For the love of all that is holy, eat something!
  • Take your time, but not too much time—eat faster!

Bedtime Goals

  • Pick up your clothes
  • Tidy your room
  • Learn to clean yourself properly!
  • Go to bed on time
  • Actually go to bed
  • Get more sleep—please
  • Sleep until dawn
  • Pretend to be asleep
  • Just lie there quietly for a few hours?

Social Goals

  • Be kind to others
  • Stand up for yourself when needed
  • Avoid hitting
  • Use your words to express feelings
  • No bad language, please
  • Communicate with us
  • Share the details of your day!
  • Try not to talk so loudly
  • Limit your chatter
  • Don’t argue back
  • Just stop the endless talking sometimes!

Manners Goals

  • Share toys and other things
  • Return what you’ve taken
  • Show respect to everyone
  • Practice good manners
  • Say “please” regularly
  • Express “thank you” after receiving something
  • And yes, say “thank you” again!
  • Honestly, SHOW SOME APPRECIATION, PLEASE!
  • Don’t forget to say “you’re welcome” too!
  • And let’s try to cut down on screen time—at least a little bit.

I’m sure you can understand my busy life—sometimes it feels easier to let them just watch TV instead!
