While rummaging through some old photo albums today, I stumbled upon a crumpled note. It was an extensive 6-page document of ‘guidelines and explanations’ (my rather over-the-top terminology) that I had prepared for my in-laws when they graciously agreed to look after my daughter. This arrangement allowed me to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime 10-day trip to Italy with my mom.

This happened eight years ago, shortly after my daughter turned one and just a week after we had moved into a new home. Our place was a chaotic maze of boxes, compounded by the usual whirlwind of caring for a toddler. Despite the disarray, my in-laws made the generous decision to fly from Arizona to Seattle to take care of her, ensuring my mom and I could indulge in a delightful food and wine tour across Italy. I continue to feel immense gratitude for their selflessness, and I can only imagine their reactions upon seeing the following list.

In an effort to assist them, I compiled what I believed to be a comprehensive guide of all the vital information they would need to keep my daughter safe and entertained during our absence. Looking back at it now, after another child and a few more years of parenting experience, I realize how amusing this instruction sheet must have been to two intelligent, loving grandparents who had successfully raised two boys of their own.

Here’s a glimpse into the note and the thoughts I can only guess were swirling in their minds as they read it… I’m sharing this with all the moms out there: for those of you who are gearing up to write your own set of ‘guidelines and instructions’ (which will likely echo my own) for your first time away from your baby. And for moms like me, who have older kids but still vividly recall that initial moment of handing over our precious little ones while venturing out of reach. Keep those notes—they’ll serve as a reminder of your growth and may inspire you to elevate your in-laws’ Christmas gifts this year.
