The Heartbreaking Reality of Protecting Our Children

In today’s society, the conversation surrounding the safety of our children in educational settings has become increasingly urgent. As a parent and educator, I often find myself grappling with the very real fear that I might need to protect your child, just as I would my own. The thought of taking a bullet for your little one brings tears to my eyes, especially as I watch my own child play peacefully in the next room. Yet, the reality is that I shouldn’t have to consider such extremes.

Despite the implementation of lockdown drills and emergency procedures, the question remains: how effective are these measures in the face of an armed assailant? A locked door offers little protection against someone intent on causing harm. In those moments, teachers like myself often devise our own contingency plans—wondering if there’s enough space in a closet, if furniture can be barricaded against the door, or if we can escape to safety through a window.

Instead of merely preparing for the unthinkable, shouldn’t we focus on preventing these tragedies? It’s crucial to examine our gun laws critically. Is there a valid reason for an individual to possess an automatic rifle? I want to live. I want my 33 students to thrive. I want my baby to grow up in a world where she can attend school without fear for her life. Why should anyone’s right to own a weapon outweigh the safety of our children?

The argument that “guns don’t kill people; people kill people” falls flat when you consider the accessibility of firearms. If those who harbor ill intentions were unable to acquire weapons easily, how many lives could be saved? The world will never be devoid of violence, but we can take steps to limit the devastation caused by firearms. Ignoring these events, as if they are merely statistics, is as harmful as watching bullying unfold without intervening.

When discussing the right to bear arms, one must question the necessity of certain firearms. If the intent is protection, then a handgun might suffice. The likelihood of encountering overwhelming home invaders is slim. For recreational purposes, there are safer alternatives to a semi-automatic rifle. The notion that the Constitution grants us the right to possess weapons designed for mass destruction is misguided. Should we also advocate for the ownership of grenade launchers? That thought is absurd, yet it mirrors the irrationality of civilians owning AR-15s.

While it’s true that making drugs illegal hasn’t eradicated their availability, it has made access more difficult. Similarly, restricting assault rifles would not make them completely unattainable, but it would certainly reduce their presence in our communities—an essential step forward.

Imagine a future where hashtags of thoughts and prayers are replaced by tangible action. A world where tragic psychological profiles are recognized before it’s too late. A world with fewer indicators of impending violence and fewer systemic failures.

Having experienced a mass shooting at my college, where a fellow student tragically lost her life, I understand the urgency of this issue. She was pursuing a safer career, yet she fell victim to senseless violence. After that day, I found solace in holding my baby closely, knowing that I would soon return to my classroom. I will embrace my students, yet the anxiety of alerts still lingers. They may not fully grasp the meaning behind our drills, but I strive to shield them from the harsh realities of our world.

I refuse to let my young students go home feeling that their survival in school is a daily achievement. We owe it to them to prioritize their safety over the right to own dangerous weapons. It’s time for America to reconsider its values and reflect on what truly matters.
