The Greatest Gift We Can Offer Our Children

As I stumbled out of bed, my eyes still heavy with sleep, my little one shuffled in, looking dazed. “Mommy, I had a little accident in my bed,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Frustrated and exhausted, I sighed deeply as I searched for clean pajamas.

As I peeled away the damp fabric, I couldn’t help but ask, my tone sharper than intended, “Did you not go potty before bedtime?” She hesitated, then softly replied, “I think I just, um, forgot.” Another sigh escaped me.

Before long, I found myself awake, wedged between my daughter and the edge of the bed, feeling a churn of guilt in my stomach. How unfair of me to respond that way. How childish. I turned to her and said quietly, “I’m sorry for forgetting to let you be little.” It’s all too easy to get lost in the responsibilities of adulthood, to be a sleep-deprived parent with a short temper.

Yet, it’s equally simple to apologize and show our children that we are human. They need to know we love them, despite our occasional slip-ups. This isn’t the first time I’ve had to say I’m sorry, and I know it won’t be the last. It’s just part of being a parent.

Let’s commit to not “forgetting” that our children are only young for a short while. They deserve the freedom to make mistakes, to spill juice, and to leave muddy footprints on our freshly cleaned floors. Let’s offer them the gift of childhood, allowing them to be little while we practice patience and humility.

In summary, the most vital gift we can provide our children is the space to grow, learn, and occasionally make mistakes while we support them in their childhood journey.
