The Foot Massage Dilemma

When your partner lets you down over something trivial yet frustrating.

Recently, after I finally stepped away from my laptop, my husband Mark and I settled into bed. We reminisced about our day, sharing amusing stories about our kids, Lily, Ben, and Evan. I was attempting to coax a foot massage out of him by softly rubbing my toes against his leg. My feet were aching from a long night in heels, and I was in dire need of some relief. Unfortunately, Mark completely disregarded my attempts.

Eventually, I resorted to pleading. “Could you please just give me a foot rub? Pretty please, Mark?”

“Ugh, I’m not rubbing your feet,” he replied dismissively.

“Why not?” I protested. “You think my feet are cute. They really hurt. Just one little rub?”

“They used to be cute,” he said. “But now they’re, um…eh…different.”

“Picture them in red nail polish!” I shot back, trying to salvage the situation.

“Well, they were cuter before. Just, um… YOUNGER,” he stammered.

“What do you mean by that?” I shot him a glare, indicating he had crossed a line. “You’re saying they look old? Really?”

“Look,” he continued, clearly backpedaling, “you’re over a decade older than when we first met. Of course, your feet will show some signs of age. Do you think your mom’s feet are ‘cute’? As we age, our feet change. That’s just how life works, you know?”

“No, Mark, I don’t know.”

He could have pointed out anything—dry skin, roughness, or maybe even a little weight gain. But “old”? OLD??? For the record, they’re not old at all. A little TLC, perhaps a good moisturizer would do wonders, but they’re only thirty-one years young.

And that’s when I decided to end the conversation—figuratively speaking, of course.
