The Dangers of Unsecured Furniture: A Call to Action for Parents

As modern parents, we are fortunate that our children are growing up in a safer environment than we did. If your childhood resembled mine, you likely enjoyed summer road trips packed into your parents’ station wagon—without a thought of seatbelts. You rode your bike without a helmet and may have even attended “chickenpox parties,” where you were intentionally exposed to the virus. Back then, safety was often an afterthought, and I doubt many of our parents considered anchoring heavy furniture to the wall.

Thankfully, times have changed. Today, our kids are buckled into car seats, booster seats, and wear helmets. They’re vaccinated, and we strive to keep their air clear of harmful cigarette smoke. However, we now understand the dangers posed by unanchored furniture. Young children can easily climb on dressers and shelves, even when we step out of the room for just a moment. The tragic consequences of furniture tip-overs have been highlighted by heartbreaking stories from families who have faced unimaginable loss due to this preventable hazard.

The group Parents Against Tip-Overs (PAT) is made up of parents who have experienced the unthinkable: the loss of a child due to an unsecured piece of furniture. In 2021 alone, four children—ages two to seven—tragically lost their lives due to these incidents. Data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows that between 2000 and 2019, 451 children under the age of 17 were killed by tip-over accidents, with a staggering 79% of these fatalities involving children younger than six.

This is why PAT is advocating for the STURDY Act (Stop Tip-Overs of Unstable, Risky Dressers on Youth Act), which would mandate safety standards for dressers and clothing storage units. Currently, the existing safety guidelines are insufficient, and many parents are unaware of the risks associated with unanchored furniture.

The STURDY Act aims to address these issues by requiring rigorous testing for clothing units, including simulations to account for the weight of children and various scenarios. It would also mandate clear warnings on furniture products and require the CPSC to establish these safety standards within a year of the Act’s enactment.

Support for the STURDY Act is growing, with endorsements from numerous organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics. However, we need to rally together and encourage our lawmakers to pass this critical legislation. As Congresswoman Jenna Thompson has stated, “Every forty-six minutes, a child is injured in a tip-over incident.” The time to act is now.

In summary, we must prioritize the safety of our children by anchoring heavy furniture and supporting legislation like the STURDY Act. By doing so, we can help prevent tragic accidents and ensure a safer environment for future generations.
