Every morning, I send my kids off with a powerful phrase: “EYES WIDE, LIGHTS SHINE.” We’ve repeated it so often that even the carpool lady started using it, and my kids’ principal began asking them if their lights were shining that day. It became a community catchphrase, and I love that my children are held accountable even at school.
We often communicate with our kids, hoping that at least some of our words resonate with them. Sometimes it seems like we’re talking to a wall, but other times, our messages do get through. I emphasize “eyes wide” at the outset because it’s clear that we’re not as observant as we used to be. With our faces glued to our devices, we miss out on engaging with people around us, whether it’s a stranger in line or the server at our favorite diner.
The intention behind “Eyes Wide, Lights Shine” is to remind my kids to be aware of their surroundings, especially during lunch or at recess. I want them to notice when someone might be feeling lonely or having a tough day. That’s when they can step in, extend a hand, and share their light with others.
Do they always remember to do this? Honestly, probably not. But I believe in the power of repetition. So, I’ll continue to share this mantra every morning and check in with them weekly about how they’ve shared their light.
A friend once shared an insightful thought with me: when we keep our eyes open and truly see others, we cultivate open hearts. An open heart radiates light. Have you ever encountered someone whose eyes sparkle because they’re connected to others? Their inner glow shines brighter through their bonds with those around them.
Of course, not every day will be filled with light. There will be times when we feel engulfed in darkness, and that’s when we may need to lean on someone else’s light. It’s a beautiful exchange—being both givers and receivers of light.
I hope that one day, my kids will look back and say, “My mom always reminded me, ‘Eyes Wide, Lights Shine,’ and we embraced that.”
