The Challenges of Parenting School-Aged Kids in Florida

As a parent in Florida, I find myself utterly drained. The ongoing back-and-forth regarding mask mandates has left me feeling like I have whiplash. At the start of the school year, it seemed unlikely that a mask mandate would even be considered, especially after Governor Edwards issued an executive order on June 30 prohibiting them. He even threatened to withhold pay from school board members who dared to defy this order.

In my community, those of us advocating for a district-wide mask mandate were met with responses like, “Sorry, we can’t help!” Despite our efforts to highlight the importance of masks, many parents, influenced by anti-science sentiments and conspiracy theories, remained resistant. However, when I attended my daughter’s elementary school registration, I was pleasantly surprised to see most adults wearing masks—except for two, one of whom was proudly sporting a “Parents for Choice” shirt.

The Legal Battle for Mask Mandates

On August 6, a group of parents advocating for mask mandates filed a lawsuit against the state, claiming that the ban violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. They argued that their children, who have disabilities, are at a greater risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19, and the state’s actions hinder their right to a safe education. As the lawsuit progressed, a circuit judge ruled on September 8 that school districts could enforce mask rules while the case was under review.

In our district, this meant that the voices of concerned parents and experts were finally acknowledged. On August 30, the school board narrowly approved a 30-day mask mandate, which is set for reevaluation soon. However, on September 10, the appeals court reinstated DeSantis’s ban, leading many parents to send their children to school without masks.

The very same day, the Department of Education announced an investigation into whether DeSantis’s order violates the ADA. This scrutiny extends to states like Iowa and South Carolina for similar reasons. Despite DeSantis’s actions—such as withholding salaries from school officials who supported mask mandates—the Biden administration has offered to compensate these districts.

The Current Situation

Currently, masks remain required in my district. My 11-year-old daughter is hopeful to get vaccinated soon, should approval come through in October. Until then, I’m left feeling frustrated by the political turmoil in our state and the selfishness of those prioritizing personal “freedom” over the safety of the community.

DeSantis insists he’s acting within the law, claiming that parents should have the right to decide about their children’s mask usage. However, what’s missing from such arguments is any scientific basis. It’s one thing to advocate for parental choice; it’s another to imply that masks aren’t necessary and that the fears surrounding the virus are exaggerated. If we’re to empower parents to make informed decisions, we must provide them with accurate information rather than sowing confusion.

The narrative that mask mandates infringe on parental rights is, frankly, misguided. What about the rights of parents with children at higher risk of severe illness? Those rights seem overlooked in the rush to defend personal freedom.
