The Case of the Man Cold

For weeks now, I’ve been battling an illness. My throat feels like sandpaper, my nose is completely clogged, my sinuses are throbbing, and I’ve been expelling all sorts of unpleasantness (apologies for the graphic imagery). With a son suffering from strep throat who seems to thrive on invading my personal space, it was only a matter of time before I succumbed to the germs. Last week, I finally started antibiotics for a sinus infection and began to feel better. Just as I was recovering, my husband caught the bug.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I love my husband dearly. I truly believe we are meant to be together, and my life would be incomplete without him. However, when he gets sick, my patience wears thin. I find myself daydreaming about escaping with our kids, far away from his dramatic display of illness.

Yesterday was a prime example. You would think he was on the brink of death. Fifty years from now, if all goes well, I can picture him on his deathbed looking not so different from how he did this past weekend. “I’m sick,” he lamented, barely able to summon the energy to leave the bed. He made a trip to the Minute Clinic, hoping for antibiotics and a heap of sympathy. An hour later, he called me sounding utterly defeated. “Did they give you anything?” I asked. “No,” he replied with a whimper. “The strep test was negative, and the doctor said it can’t be a sinus infection since it just started.”

“It’s just a cold,” I replied. A man-cold, to be specific. Someone, please rescue me. I’m not sure either of us will make it through this week.

In summary, navigating a sick household can be a challenge, especially when one partner’s “man cold” demands extra attention. Balancing care for a sick spouse while managing your own health is no easy feat, but it’s all part of the journey.
