Every year, I reluctantly join my family on their camping trips. They absolutely adore it, and judging by how quickly sites get booked, it seems many others do too! You’d think Beyoncé was headlining with how fast they’re snapped up! Over the years, I’ve come to recognize nine distinct types of people who flourish in the great outdoors.

Thrifty Adventurers

Camping is an affordable escape that just skims the surface of a vacation. It’s ideal for those who crave a change of scenery without breaking the bank – and who want to avoid the embarrassment of being kicked out of a lifestyle store’s display setup.

Eco-Competitors

For some, camping is a contest to be the ultimate eco-warrior among their friends from yoga class. Merely practicing mindfulness at home isn’t enough; true dedication requires pitching a tent and embracing nature for the weekend.

Fugitives

There’s something about the woods that makes me think of fugitives on the run. Perhaps it’s the countless horror stories I’ve consumed or the real-life tales of crime that have unfolded near remote locations. After all, who would want to hang out in a crowded café with the risk of being recognized? The wilderness offers the perfect hideout for those looking to escape the law.

Wanderers

Camping transforms living out of a car, complete with plates from five different states, into an exhilarating experience rather than a suspicious lifestyle. Sure, there’s no complimentary breakfast, but the absence of prying park rangers makes it a suitable option for those evading society’s norms. With no one to disrupt their solitude, these wanderers seem to thrive on the freedom.

Energetic Kids

Without bathtubs and rules about cleanliness, kids can run wild in nature. The absence of indoor voices and the late-night indulgence in sugar-filled treats like s’mores brings pure joy. What’s not to love?

Laundry Avoiders

Packing for camping can feel like preparing for every climate imaginable. You might need everything from summer shorts to winter coats. Once the trip is over, there’s no simply tossing those clothes into the dresser – everything reeks of mildew and dampness, a real nightmare for anyone who dreads laundry. For those who don’t handle their own laundry, it seems like a magical fairy always ensures they have clean clothes waiting for them back home.

Untidy Campers

Just like the elusive fugitives, those who shy away from personal hygiene appreciate the chance to blend in while camping. Everyone becomes a little dirty in the great outdoors. Even the most polished individuals can look like they just rolled in the mud after a short time.

Men

Let’s be honest; this category could encompass all of the above.

Exhibitionists

Some people seem to relish the thrill of public displays of affection, even in the wild. Whether they’re in a tent or near a campfire, they don’t hold back. It would be nice if they opted for a more discreet location – perhaps a local hardware store would suffice.

Now, before you respond with indignation about how wonderful camping is and how I’m missing the point, take a good look at this list. Chances are, you fit into one of these categories! If you’re not ready to share, I’ll happily draw my own conclusions.
