As a parent, I’ve navigated the tumultuous waters of potty training, dealt with stomach bugs, and handled an array of peculiar rashes. I’ve wiped noses and bottoms, allowed my kids to deposit questionable substances into my hands, and even pried gum from the soles of their shoes. Like many moms, I understand that parenting can be an unpleasant task.
However, nothing—absolutely nothing—could have prepared me for the sheer nightmare of dealing with head lice. The relentless, maddening ordeal of head lice is a true test of resilience, and it unfolds in ten excruciating stages.
Stage 1: Denial
When my daughter mentioned her head was itching, my initial reaction was to dismiss it. After all, just last week she was convinced she had a brain tumor, and the week before that, she swore she was lactose intolerant. I’ve learned that it’s typically best to wait a day or two. Usually, these things pass. Usually.
Stage 2: The Discovery
If you’ve never leaned down to kiss your child on the head, only to be met with a sight of her scalp swarming with tiny brown insects, I can’t possibly put that horror into words. Shock and disbelief take over, accompanied by a wave of mortification.
Stage 3: Online Confirmation
Once the infestation is confirmed, you rush to Google for clarity. Could it be something else? Surely there has to be another explanation? But alas, Google Images delivers the grim confirmation: yes, indeed, it’s lice.
Stage 4: Weighing Your Options
You start to consider natural treatments. You’ve been avoiding harsh chemicals for years—what if you could tackle this with something gentle? Mayonnaise, olive oil, vinegar… sounds promising. But then, you catch sight of your other children scratching their heads. You feel an odd itchiness on your own scalp. Is it real or just in your head? You decide to err on the side of caution. Ultimately, you combine vinegar, olive oil with a hefty dose of chemicals that you’ve spent years avoiding.
Stage 5: Frantic Shopping
Initially, you contemplate burning your house down and starting afresh. But after some calming words from your partner, you take stock of what needs to be purchased. Off to the store you go for vinegar, olive oil, shower caps, new hair brushes, hair ties, headbands, and a few bottles of wine. Don’t forget the several bottles of chemical shampoo to treat yourself and your children. A couple hundred dollars later, you’re finally ready.
Stage 6: The Treatment
It’s time for the treatment. Line up the kids. Hold your breath. Cover your eyes. Lather, time yourself, and rinse. Move on to the next child. No complaints allowed!
Stage 7: Nit-Picking
If you ever doubt your quality time with your kids, take up nit-picking. This will provide you with countless hours of one-on-one interaction as you scrutinize every strand of hair. After a couple of hours, you’ll find yourself wishing to do anything else, even that one time you had to remove gum from her hair after that disastrous sleepover. You have calls to make.
Stage 8: Informing Your Circle
I’m not sure what the etiquette is for informing friends about lice exposure, but I find a simple text message works best: “Bad news. We’ve got lice. So sorry! 😱😩”
Stage 9: Assigning Blame
Eventually, you’ll have to face your friends. A few emojis can’t smooth over the awkwardness. You need someone to blame. Was it at school? Gymnastics? The mall? The origin of the lice remains a mystery while you drown in laundry.
Stage 10: Obsessive Cleaning
Everything must be washed—sheets, pillows, toys. If it can’t be washed, it’s vacuumed, packed away, or discarded. This will monopolize several weeks of your life, but you’ll need breaks to eat, sleep, and nit-pick.
Once you survive this hellish journey, life gradually returns to normal. I still tense up every time my kids try on hats at the mall or need new bike helmets, but our time in head lice hell eventually fades into a distant memory—except for the occasional compulsion to check through my kids’ hair, just to be safe.
