Since becoming a parent, I’ve found myself saying and doing things I never imagined. Motherhood has turned me into a fountain of nonsensical questions and bewildering statements. Sometimes, after I speak, I wonder: “What was that supposed to mean?” Here are ten of the most ridiculous things I’ve said recently:

  1. “If you don’t put your shoes on, I’m leaving without you.” Really, where can I possibly go without her? The backyard is my legal limit, or maybe the garage.
  2. “Do you want me to spank you?” Honestly, how many kids would ever say “yes” to this?
  3. “If you don’t tidy up that mess, you’re going straight to bed.” It’s only two in the afternoon!
  4. “If you don’t stop, I’ll turn this car around and we’ll go home.” This threat only seems to apply when we’re headed to appointments like the doctor or preschool.
  5. “You have 30 seconds to clean up those toys, or I’m throwing them all away.” Who has the energy to dispose of all those toys?
  6. “If you don’t eat, I’m not giving you any more dinner.” Makes zero sense, right?
  7. “I’m going to count to three, and you better stop, or else.” Even I’m not sure what “or else” means.
  8. “Are you trying to make me angry?” Come on, my toddlers aren’t plotting against me; they’re just blissfully ignoring me until I feel like my head might explode.
  9. “If you don’t start paying attention, I’m going to stop talking.” Said by a mom to kids who aren’t listening, naturally.
  10. “If you keep playing with your food, I’m going to take it away.” They’re not eating because they’re either not hungry or just not interested, duh.

I know I’ll need to step up my game as they grow older and realize they’ve had the upper hand all along. Until then, they’ve got 30 seconds—no exceptions.
