Every year, one of our biggest family challenges is deciding on Halloween costumes. First off, it takes immense patience just to get my kids to agree on one idea. “No, buddy, you can’t be a zombie-ninja-pirate. I’m not buying three different outfits just so you can combine them with one accessory!”

Secondly, I have to be super strict about not letting them change their minds every week. I’m sure I’m not alone in this: once I finally order or create a costume, I’ve mentally prepared myself to say ‘no’ a thousand times when they ask to switch it up.

That’s why when I stumbled upon a hilarious post by Sarah Thompson on Instagram, I couldn’t help but chuckle. We’ve all been there, right? So I decided to compile a list of our top ten favorite kids’ costumes for 2023 (in no particular order). Sometimes we all need a little inspiration, and seeing others’ creative ideas is part of what makes the internet so great!

  1. Miguel from Disney’s Coco
For little fans of music and Disney, this adorable Miguel costume is budget-friendly and simple to put together—just grab a guitar! While the full skeleton look is cute, face paint is totally optional.
  2. Freddie Mercury
For the mini music lovers, if your child can belt out “Under Pressure,” this costume is a hit. Pair a pink tank top with a black leather skirt for a fun twist.
  3. Wayne and Garth
No duo loves music quite like Wayne and Garth. This classic pairing makes for a hilarious costume idea for both kids and adults, especially with a fantastic mullet wig!
  4. Bernie Sanders — The Viral Version
I can’t even with this adorable Lil’ Bernie! The hairline is on point, and I’m already thinking about how to craft a collapsible chair from cardboard for them to carry.
  5. Ruth Bader Ginsburg
For families who appreciate a political twist, this RBG costume is a winner. Your little girl will cherish dressing as this iconic figure when she’s older!
  6. Somebody’s Grandparent
Who can resist a little one dressed as a grandparent? Plus, the cotton ball wig is a fun craft project for kids to get involved in!
  7. The Sanderson Sisters
If your kids are into the classic Halloween vibe, you can’t go wrong with the Sanderson Sisters. “Oh look! Another glorious Halloween. Makes me sick!”
  8. Pennywise
This costume might be a bit unconventional for kids, but its creep factor makes it epic! Just be sure it’s age-appropriate—or that your child simply loves spooky vibes.
  9. A S’more
For a sweeter spin, how about a s’more costume? Food-themed outfits can be super fun, and this one is particularly adorable!
  10. Madeline
Finally, this charming take on the literary heroine Madeline captures bravery and spirit. Any child would love to embody her for the night, plus it’s a simple costume that can be worn beyond Halloween.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful accounts that shared their children’s costumes this year, providing me with inspiration from their early preparations. If you’re like those parents and post costumes ahead of time (unlike me who waits until the last moment), you rock! With just under three weeks to go, I’m feeling the pressure and not sure I can resist buying six costumes for my two kids. Help!
