A youthful punk band made up of four girls, aged 10 to 16, has taken the internet by storm with their empowering anthem “Racist, Sexist Boy.” Known as The Linda Lindas, they recently secured a record deal following the song’s viral success over the weekend. The powerful track addresses anti-Asian American sentiments and misogyny, and it’s incredibly catchy to boot.
Drummer Nia shared a poignant story that inspired their song: “Before the lockdown, a boy in my class told me his dad advised him to stay away from people who are Chinese. When I mentioned that I am Chinese, he literally backed away. So this song is directed at him and all the other racist, sexist boys out there.” Clocking in at under two minutes, the song is a fierce declaration from these talented young women.
The lyrics hit hard, with Eloise belting out, “You are a racist sexist boy / And you have racist sexist joys / We rebuild what you destroy,” while the rest of the band rocks out on their instruments. The Linda Lindas, which includes Bela, Eloise, Nia, and Luna, describe themselves on their Bandcamp page as “Half Asian / half Latinx. Two sisters, a cousin, and their close friend channeling the spirit of original punk, power pop, and new wave.”
Despite still being in school—the youngest hasn’t even hit middle school yet—the band has signed with Epitaph Records, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, just days after their May 20, 2021 video went viral. The group formed back in 2018 at Girlschool LA, a rock camp designed to uplift women-led bands. They’ve already made their mark, appearing in the Netflix film Moxie and contributing a song for The Claudia Kishi Club documentary. In a sweet detail, the LA Times noted that the girls recorded their last album during a sleepover.
“It’s kinda strange because we’re still home in our pajamas. Nothing feels different yet; it’s not like we’re going out and people are saying, ‘Oh my God, it’s The Linda Lindas,’” Nia remarked to the LA Times. “But yesterday my social media was flooded with posts about us, and I was just like, ‘Whoa, this is wild.’ I’ve been getting calls and texts from people I haven’t spoken to in ages who I never thought would know about the band.” As for the record deal and their newfound fame, Bela is mostly focused on finishing her schoolwork. “It’s tough because I’ve got three projects due on Monday, and I haven’t even started them,” she admitted, just two days after their video went viral.
Rock on, you young queens!
