“Summer Vacation” Is the Ultimate Oxymoron

Hey parents, it’s that time of year again: May is slipping away, and with it comes a tidal wave of chaos. We’re in the thick of field trips, school recitals, and project deadlines. Our children are bouncing off the walls, suffering from what can only be described as a severe case of spring fever (seriously, it should be classified). As we navigate this whirlwind, many of us are just counting down the days until the school year wraps up.

I get it. I truly do. But brace yourselves, because summer is no walk in the park either.

Sure, the allure of summer might look fantastic right now through our tired, hopeful lenses. After countless lunches packed (with crusts trimmed, of course), enduring freezing baseball games, and signing our names on what feels like a million permission slips, we’re at our wit’s end. The thought of a few months without the daily grind of waking grumpy kids or quizzing them about homework sounds heavenly—until reality hits.

Summer, my friends, is a completely different beast. Gone are the days of packing lunches; now we face an endless parade of snack requests. Homework battles are replaced by sibling squabbles, and the clutter of paperwork transforms into a sea of wet towels and popsicle wrappers. Plus, don’t forget the added joys of mosquitoes and that sticky summer heat.

So, gear up, parents! This isn’t a practice run. Summer is on its way, and it’s time to prepare. You’d better stock up on enormous boxes of fruit snacks and sunscreen, and get ready to say “Shut the door!” about 245 times a day. If you want any semblance of peace at bedtime, consider investing in blackout curtains to avoid nightly debates over why it’s still light outside when your child needs to sleep.

Now, don’t get me wrong; summer can be amazing. Think road trips, ice cream, and evening bike rides. However, managing expectations is key. So dial down those lofty visions of a perfect summer. Lower them. Lower them some more. There you go—now we’re talking.

In the spirit of solidarity, just remember: only 92 days until the back-to-school countdown begins.
