In a generous move, Starbucks is providing free coffee to those on the front lines combating the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative aims to show appreciation for the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals and first responders. From now until May 3, anyone identified as a healthcare worker or first responder can enjoy a complimentary tall brewed coffee, either hot or iced, at Starbucks locations. This initiative includes police officers, paramedics, firefighters, nurses, doctors, medical staff, and researchers.

The idea originated from a store manager named Jake Thompson in Washington. “When the crisis is just two miles away, the impact is palpable,” he shared with the Starbucks Stories blog. “I could see the burden that everyone was carrying during this difficult time.” Inspired by the community’s need, he decided to offer coffee to uplift those serving in challenging circumstances. “Even small gestures can make a difference,” he emphasized.

Starbucks partners worldwide quickly adopted this initiative, providing coffee to various locations such as hospitals, grocery stores, and nursing homes. In light of the pandemic, the company has also committed to providing emergency pay to all store partners for a 30-day period. Furthermore, the Starbucks Foundation has pledged $500,000 to support front-line responders in the U.S. This funding will be equally distributed to Direct Relief for personal protective equipment and Operation Gratitude, which aims to send 50,000 care packages to first responders and healthcare workers.

“I am truly inspired by our Starbucks partners across the globe who proudly wear the green apron and rise to the occasion,” stated Starbucks CEO, Mark Reynolds, in a letter to customers. “It is every business’s duty to support its employees during these uncertain times, prioritizing their well-being and benefits over mere financial decisions.”
