Starbucks Faces Criticism Again… Over a Cookie

Starbucks seems to be in continual hot water this holiday season. Following the uproar over their red cups, the internet is now buzzing with outrage about a cookie. Yes, a cookie.

To me, that cookie resembles a polar bear in a cozy scarf. However, others view it in a much darker light.

“Is it just me, or does Starbucks’s cookie look like a polar bear with its throat cut?” — @jessicadrew

“Loving the new Starbucks cookies. A polar bear with its throat slashed? That’s a holiday memory that sticks!” – @edward_smith

“Are those polar bear cookies from #Starbucks festive, or is it just me seeing a #crimescene?” – @sarahclark

It seems that when some individuals gaze upon the Rorschach-like red lines on the cookie, they interpret it as a polar bear with a gruesome injury, complete with blood running down its neck. Nothing quite encapsulates the holiday spirit like a cookie depicting a violently killed animal, right? Especially considering that this particular treat hasn’t graced Starbucks stores since December 2010.

Pause for effect.

Indeed. Starbucks stated, “In December 2010, we offered cheerful polar bear cookies with smiling faces and warm scarves. This is just one of our traditions of providing delightful holiday cookies. This year, you can enjoy snowman cookies and gingerbread people in festive attire.”

Now, not only is social media in an uproar over a mere cookie, but they’re also revisiting a past incident from five years ago.

Seriously, internet, lighten up and do your research. In today’s age, nearly everyone has access to a wealth of information and a platform to express their opinions. Yet, many are misusing these tools and focusing on trivial matters rather than addressing significant issues we face today.

In a decade, no one will remember the red cups or those polar bear cookies. Instead, we will still be concerned about pressing issues like terrorism, mass shootings, health crises, homelessness, inequality, and racism. These are the matters that truly deserve our attention—not a cookie from five years ago that has resurfaced online.

As we approach 2016, let’s agree to invest our time and energy into meaningful pursuits that can improve our world. Our children deserve a society that prioritizes real issues over a stale cookie making headlines.
