Spelling Bee Champion Zaila Avant-Garde Receives Multiple Full-Ride Scholarship Offers

The accomplished 14-year-old, Zaila Avant-Garde from Harvey, Louisiana, has had an eventful week. She triumphed at the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee held at Disney World, securing her place in history as the first African American champion with the winning word “Murraya,” which refers to a type of citrus tree. Since her remarkable victory, Zaila has not only been celebrated nationwide but has also attracted three full-ride scholarship offers from prestigious colleges.

During the celebrations, the spirited teen showcased her joy by twirling and jumping, capturing the hearts of many across the country. Zaila is also a record-holder in basketball, boasting three Guinness World Records, despite having only started competing in spelling bees two years ago. Following her historic win, Southern University became the latest institution to extend a full-ride scholarship to Zaila. President Ray L. Belton announced the scholarship on Twitter, adding that a special “Zaila Day” would be celebrated at the university. “I am thrilled to announce that @SouthernU_BR is offering #ZailaAvantgarde a full scholarship and a #Zaila Day at SU, part of the only #HBCU system in the nation,” he tweeted. “Our student leaders, faculty, and alumni look forward to meeting you. Welcome to the #JaguarNation!”

This offer comes after LSU President William Tate also expressed his support for Zaila, tweeting, “Zaila Avant-Garde @basketballasart performed at the highest level in the National Spelling Bee. Your academic achievements reflect scholarship above all! @LSU_Honors awaits. I’m writing to offer you a full scholarship to attend LSU.”

Additionally, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System made history by being the first to offer Zaila a scholarship to any community college in the state. While she is likely grateful for these generous offers, Zaila has publicly stated her aspiration to attend Harvard University.
