Ava DuVernay, the Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated executive producer, has launched an exciting new series on NBC this fall called “Home Sweet Home.” (Note that this is different from Disney Plus’s latest release, “Home Sweet Home Alone.”) I couldn’t be more thrilled about it!
Recently, I had the opportunity to join a Zoom session with Ava and a couple of families featured in “Home Sweet Home.” Hearing them discuss their remarkable experiences on the show was unforgettable. After watching the first episode today, I’m convinced Ava is a true visionary.
“Home Sweet Home” pairs families that come from vastly different backgrounds and allows them to swap homes for a transformative week. This unique experience challenges their perceptions surrounding race, religion, economics, geography, gender, and identity, as they step into each other’s lives. At the end of each episode, the families meet to reflect on their eye-opening journeys.
The first episode was incredibly moving and brought me to tears. I can only imagine how emotional the rest of the season will be, as the show—similar to “Wife Swap”—makes families vulnerable while they live as complete strangers for a week.
Even though the thought of welcoming strangers into my home feels a bit daunting, I find the idea of exchanging homes with another family to gain insights into a different culture fascinating. One of the Wixx twins even likened visiting another family’s home to “diving into a pool,” describing the uncertainty of what to expect, which I think is a brilliant analogy!
The families also leave behind a “handbook” for their new hosts (similar to what was done on “Wife Swap”), allowing them to truly understand each other’s lifestyles for the week. Now, I’m curious about what I would include in my own handbook.
This series seems not only amazing and emotional but also essential. In a time when racism is alarmingly vocal, I applaud Ava for creating a show that celebrates diverse cultures and families instead of merely tolerating—or fearing—them. It serves as a reminder that despite our differences in religion and history, we actually have much in common!
If NBC decides to renew this for another season, I’m all in! I would love the chance to immerse myself in another culture by swapping homes for a week.
New episodes air every Friday at 8 PM/7 PM Central on NBC, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu a day later.
